Lamar Tops Texas College 58-0 in Season Opener

BEAUMONT, Texas - Braving a steady and driving rain and winds that
gusted up to 30 miles an hour at times, Lamar opened its 2011 season with a
decisive 58-0 victory over Texas College.
Although the inclement weather kept thousands of Lamar fans at
home, the Cardinals put on an impressive performance, one that included a
four-touchdown 105-yard rushing performance by Navarro College transfer
DePauldrick Garrett, who starred at nearby West Orange-Stark High School,
Garrett's four touchdowns set a Lamar record, and his 24 points
surpassed Harold LaFitte's 46-year-old school record of 20 set in a 1965 game
against Pensacola Navy. Also, the eight extra points booted by sophomore Justin
Stout matched the school record set by Walter Smith against Mexico Poly in
1961.
Teamwise, the 58-point winning margin was the largest in school
history, exceeding the 48 points by which the 1953 Cardinals outscored Mexico
Poly.

Tulane
47, Southeastern Louisiana 33
NEW ORLEANS, La. - In a game that saw teams combine for 812 yards and 44 first
downs, Tulane was too much for Southeastern Louisiana, handing the Lions a
47-33 loss in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at the
Louisiana Superdome.
The
Lions (0-1), who had 21 players make their Southeastern debut on Saturday,
dropped their season opener, despite amassing 419 total yards and 26 first
downs. However, Tulane (1-0) countered with an explosive attack led by a
267-yard, three-touchdown passing performance by Ryan Griffin and a school
record 213 kickoff return yards by Robert Kelley.
Junior
Brian Young took the majority of the snaps under center for the Lions,
finishing 20-for-35 for 249 yards and a rushing touchdown. Junior Nathan
Stanley also made his debut for Southeastern, connecting on five of nine passes
for 46 yards. Senior Brandon Collins was Southeastern's top receiver, grabbing
nine passes for 94 yards.

Kansas 42, Lamar

LAWRENCE, Kan. - McNeese State made its season debut Saturday, dropping a 42-24
decision to Big 12 foe Kansas though the Cowboys leaving a lot of points on the
field.
Quarterbacks Cody Stroud and Riley Dodge came up with excellent
showings and the Cowboys also had a notable production from the receiving
corps. The two led the Cowboys in the offensive game, Stroud completing
22-of-27 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown and Dodge hitting on 9-of-14 for
107 yards and a score and leading the team in rushing with 45 yards.
Darius Carey led with seven receptions for 73 yards while
Champlain Babin caught five passes for 108 yards and a score. Babin totaled 206 all-purpose yards as he
also returned kicks for 80 yards and rushed for 18 yards.
