Southland Conference Announces Football Players of the Week

FRISCO, Texas - McNeese State sophomore quarterback Cody Stroud was named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. His teammate, sophomore cornerback Terence Cahee, joined Northwestern State junior linebacker Derek Rose as co-defensive players of the week and Southeastern Louisiana red-shirt freshman Jordan Wells was named special teams player of the week.
 

Offensive Player of the Week: Cody Stroud, McNeese State

Stroud completed 22-of-27 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown and ran for another in the team's loss at Kansas, a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision, on Saturday. The sophomore from Montgomery, La. (Montgomery H.S.), led the Cowboys on two scoring drives and completed eight consecutive passes in both drives. His .818 completion percentage was one of the best in school history. He scored on a 1-yard run and tossed a 14-yard strike to Champlain Babin for another.

Co-Defensive Player of the Week:  Terence Cahee, McNeese State

Cahee came off the bench to record eight tackles, including seven solo stops and a sack, in the Cowboys' loss at Big 12 member Kansas on Saturday. The Jayhawks were driving deep into McNeese territory in the fourth quarter. On a fourth-and-1 play, Cahee, a sophomore from Westlake, La. (Westlake H.S.), sacked Jayhawk quarterback Jordan Webb for a 12-yard loss.
 
 
Co-Defensive Player of the Week:  Derek Rose, Northwestern State

Rose spearheaded a defensive shutdown of Delta State in the second half as the Demons overcame a 17-point deficit to claim a 24-23 win last Thursday. The junior linebacker from New Orleans, La. (O.P. Walker), recorded eight tackles, including three for losses totaling eight yards. The Statesmen netted only 63 yards in the second half, while quarterback Micah Davis, a Harlon Hill Award candidate, went 8-of-27 with two interceptions.

Honorable Mention:  Jarrett Brown, Sam Houston State; Jessie Sims, Central Arkansas; Darby Jackson, Lamar.
 
 
Special Teams Player of the Week: Jordan Wells, Southeastern Louisiana

Wells, a redshirt freshman, made his collegiate debut, averaging 28.0 yards per kickoff return and totaling 224 all-purpose yards in a loss to Tulane, an FBS member. The running back from Round Rock, Texas (Round Rock H.S.), recorded a 46-yard return on his first attempt and added returns of 44 and 32 yards among his eight returns against the Conference USA foe.

Honorable Mention:  Matt Foster, Sam Houston State; Eddie Camara, Central Arkansas; Justin Stout, Lamar; Phillip Harvey, Northwestern State.
 
 
Each school's sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
