THIBODAUX, La. - The 500th victory in Northwestern State football history had little mystery Saturday afternoon as the visiting Demons dashed to a three-touchdown first quarter lead behind quarterback Brad Henderson on the way to the school's first shutout triumph in 53 games, 34-0 over Nicholls State.

It was the Southland Conference opener for both teams. Northwestern (2-2 overall) followed losses at LSU and SMU with a dominating performance, outgaining Nicholls (1-3) by 396-212.

Henderson had touchdown throws of 9, 2 and 48 yards in the opening period while finishing 13 of 19 for 187 yards, and adding 44 yards rushing. The triumph moved the Demons to 500-418-22 in 102 seasons since their first intercollegiate game in 1907.

No. 18/19 McNeese State 48, Southeastern Louisiana 27

LAKE CHARLES, La. - McNeese State put on its strongest show of the season both offensively and defensively as the No. 18/19 Cowboys punched out a 48-27 Southland Conference victory over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday night.

It was the league opener for both teams and McNeese ran its overall record to 2-1 while Southeastern fell to 1-3.

Among the highlights of the game for the Cowboys were two tailbacks (Andre Anderson and Marcus Wiltz) rushing for more than 100 yards each, quarterbacks Cody Stroud and Riley Dodge combining for three touchdowns passing, Shelby Hemenway blocking a Southeastern Louisiana punt, the Cowboys scoring 21 points in 10 minutes in the second half, Darrell Jenkins and Malcolm Bronson intercepting passes and McNeese totaling 446 yards in the game.

Anderson ran for a game high 118 yards on 15 carries while Wiltz came up with 104 yards on 18 trips.  Stroud completed 15 of 23 passes for 145 yards and two tds and Dodge connected on two passes, one for a touchdown.

The Cowboys rushed for a season high 287 yards and had 159 yards passing.

No. 26/20 Sam Houston State 48, New Mexico 45 (Overtime)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Sam Houston State sophomore running back Tim Flanders set a school record with five rushing touchdowns including a 4-yard score for the game-winner in overtime as Sam Houston defeated New Mexico 48-45 Saturday night at University Stadium.

The win was the Bearkats' third in 25 games against Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly I-A) teams since 1986. The overtime win is only the second victory in seven extra time games. It was the 17th win over an FBS team by a Southland Conference team since 2000 and the first since the 2009 season.

Flanders rushed 30 times for a career high 194 yards. The performance was the 11th highest rushing total by a Bearkat running back ever. His five rushing touchdowns broke the school record of four set by Charles Harris against North Texas in 1992 and James Aston versus Nicholls State in 2008.

Sam Houston gained 373 yards on the ground, the sixth highest team total ever and the most for the Bearkat offense since 1991. Richard Sincere carried 11 times for 72 yards and quarterback Brian Bell ran for 55 yards and completed 10 of 18 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns.

The teams combined for 93 points and 1,075 totals yards in the contest.

Arkansas State 53, Central Arkansas 24

JONESBORO, Ark. - Arkansas State rode the leg of sophomore kicker Brian Davis for much of the night and eventually wore down Central Arkansas on Saturday, taking a 53-24 victory before a home crowd of 27,918 at ASU Stadium.

The teams were meeting for the first time since 1997 and the first time with both schools at the NCAA Division I level. ASU closed the gap in the overall series to 12-10-2, winning for the third consecutive time. The attendance was the fourth highest in ASU history.


The  Red Wolves (2-2, 0-0), an FBS program in the Sun Belt Conference, piled up  646 yards of total offense but had to settle for field goals on numerous occasions. ASU sophomore kicker Brian Davis set the Sun Belt single-game record with six field goals, one short of tying the NCAA record.


The Bears (1-3, 0-1), playing without starting senior quarterback Nathan Dick who was out with a concussion, finished with 322 yards of offense, with sophomore Wynrick Smothers completing 16 of 31 passes for 224 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. He also caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from running back Terence Bobo for UCA's final touchdown.

Texas State 35, No. 17/22 Stephen F. Austin 26
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - No. 17/22 Stephen F. Austin could not overcome seven dropped passes, including two that would have been for touchdowns, Saturday night falling to Texas State, 35-26. The loss, which is the team's third straight, and fifth consecutive to Texas State, drops SFA to 1-3 (.250) on the season.
 
The Lumberjacks led twice in the first half, despite an offense that struggled to find its rhythm in the early going. But after taking a 10-7 early in the second quarter, the Lumberjacks surrendered 21 unanswered points to fall behind 28-10 with 6:20 remaining in the third quarter.
 
The Lumberjacks recorded 211 yards of total offense in the first half, and finished the game with 419, but struggled to make big plays when it needed to. On seven different occasions quarterback Brady Attaway found open targets only to see his normally sure-handed receivers drop passes. Attaway finished the game 32-of-64 for 353 yards, but no touchdowns.
