Central Arkansas' SAAC Volunteers at Conway Housing Authority
CONWAY, Ark. Student-athletes from the University of Central Arkansas partnered with the Arkansas Dream Center to pass out pre-cooked hams to residents of the Conway Housing development recently.
It was a project of the UCA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in conjunction with the Southland Conference's "12 Days of Christmas" program. Student-athletes from UCA's football, track and field, softball and tennis teams worked on the project.
Most of the residents of the Conway Housing development are unable to provide a nice Thanksgiving meal for their families, so the hams were a real blessing during the holidays. Students also gathered information from each resident on how many children they had and if they had any need for warm clothes or toys for Christmas.
They were then able to invite them to the Arkansas Dream Center Christmas Mall, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 17. The UCA SAAC will again partner with the Arkansas Dream Center to pass out free clothes and toys to residents of the housing authority.
"The even was a great time for our student-athletes to join together and serve local families,' said Cory Cangelosi, UCA SAAC sponsor. "While passing out hams, they also played catch, chase, soccer and much more with the neighborhood kids.
"The kids were excited to have a real college athlete in their backyard playing ball with them. And our college student-athletes were excited to meet such a real need just blocks from our UCA campus. I was proud of our student-athletes for giving their time to help make this project a success.'
