Texas State Student-Athlete Advisory Council Serving The San Marcos Community 12/21/2011 4:21:00 PM SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas State University Student-Athlete Advisory Council (S.A.A.C.) members are participating in some community service projects which have helped the Hays County Food Bank and will benefit a Central Texas Medical Center Hospice in San Marcos and the Ronald McDonald House of Central Texas in 2011-12. To help the Hays County Food Bank prepare for Thanksgiving, the S.A.A.C. members collected non-perishable food items and donated 484 pounds of non-perishable food. The S.A.A.C. members handed out 500 brown paper grocery bags that were donated by HEB and stapled flyers asking members of the San Marcos community to donate non-perishable food items. Two days later, they collected the filled bags and donated the food. This marks the fifth straight year that the S.A.A.C. has participated in the food drive and the group has donated nearly 3,000 pounds of food during that span. The Texas State S.A.A.C. is a group of Bobcat student-athletes who are considered the leaders on their respective Bobcat teams. Bobcat hurdler Katie Miller serves as the group's president, while the other officers are women's golfer Gabby de Reuck and tennis player Bérénice Van den Berg. The S.A.A.C. consists of two representatives from each sport, and meets monthly to help plan community service events and special programs as well as serve as a voice for student-athletes in the Texas State Athletic Department. "I think (the food drive) went really well," said de Reuck. "We were able to get a lot of food donated to the San Marcos food bank and I think that doing food drives and community projects like this help the community see that (Texas State student-athletes) care about the people in San Marcos. Overall, it was a great experience and a lot of fun to be a part of it." The S.A.A.C. members also are continuing to participate in the "Bubbles for Trouble" project throughout the 2011-12 fall and spring semesters. The council is asking Texas State student-athletes to donate unused travel toiletries (hotel soaps, shampoos, conditioners and lotions) to a Central Texas Medical Center Hospice in San Marcos. In addition, the S.A.A.C. members are participating in the "Pull-Tab Project" with other schools in the Southland Conference. The S.A.A.C. is collecting pull tabs from aluminum cans and next spring, they will turn them into designated recycling centers. The money raised will benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Central Texas.
