Stroud Leads Gold Team to 28-10 Victory over Blue in McNeese Spring Game
LAKE CHARLES, La. Quarterback Cody Stroud led the Gold team on
four scoring drives in a 28-10 victory over the Blue team in the annual McNeese
State spring football game March 29.
The Cowboy junior, the returning starter from last year, hit on
scoring tosses of six yards to Wes Briscoe and 21 yards to Javaris Murray in a
night during which he completed 12 of the 16 passes he tossed for 159 yards.
Murray had opened the scoring on a 58 yard touchdown run and the
other Gold score came on a 46 yard run by Champlain Babin.
The Blue team got a 41 yard field goal from James Bice and an 18
yard touchdown pass from Garrett McCain to Hunter Romero in the final seconds
of the contest which concluded the Cowboys' spring workouts.
Offensively the Gold totaled 364 yards (200 rushing and 164
passing) while the Blue had 211 yards (136 rushing and 75 passing).
Murray was the game leader with 83 yards on six rushes while Gold
running mate Champlain Babin had 63 yards on five rushes. Leading the Blue was
quarterback McCain with 36 yards and tailback Kelvin Bennett ran for 35 yards.
Stroud was the game's passing leader while Tyler Bolfing hit on 4
of 6 for 27 yards and McCain on 5 of 11 for 48 yards for the Blue.
In the receiving department, tight end Josh Jordan led the Gold
with six catches for 71 yards and Kendale Thomas had three catches for 27 yards
for the Blue.
Defensively, the leaders for the Gold were linebacker Orrin
Fontenot and defensive back Halston Flanigan with five tackles each while
leading the Blue with five tackles apiece were defensive back Terence Cahee and
linebacker Deonte Thompson.
For the Gold, Wallace Scott had a tackle for a loss and a fumble
recovery, Gabe Hamner forced a fumble and had a pass break up, Fontenot
recovered a fumble and Quentin Marsh had a quarterback sack.
Blue leaders included Cahee with a fumble recovery and a Logan
Gladney with a sack.
