McNeese State Extends Winning Streak to Four with 80-54 Win

LAKE CHARLES, La. – It was raining threes Sunday as McNeese State’s women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to four games, its longest of the season with an 80-54 Southland Conference win over Northwestern State.  The win lifts the Cowgirls’ overall record to 12-9 overall and 7-3 in league play. Northwestern State falls to 7-13 overall and 3-7 in league play.

McNeese was hitting on all cylinders today and ended the game shooting 50.9 percent from the field including a season high 56 percent from 3-point range. McNeese made a season high 14 treys, two shy of the school and Southland Conference record of 16. 

Ashlyn Baggett scored a game-high 24 points and tied her career high with six 3-pointers. She was 8 of 14 from the field and 6 of 9 from behind the arc. Caitlyn Baggett scored 13 points and was perfect from the field.  She ended the game on a 5-for-5 performance including making all three treys. Cecilia Okoye chipped in 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. Also scoring in double figures was Allison Baggett, who ended the game with 10 points.  Freshman Charity Robinson came off the bench to lead the Cowgirls with six rebounds.

Ashlyn opened the game up with a three-pointer and the Cowgirls never trailed in the game.  She also hit a trey to end the half as McNeese held a 42-29 halftime lead.  The Cowgirls held a double digit lead for most of the game and held its largest lead of 29 points with 3:24 left in the game.

Northwestern State was led in scoring by Jasmine Upchurch who tied for a game high 24 points.

McNeese will travel to Sam Houston State Thursday for a 5:30 game that will be on ESPN3.  The Cowgirls will conclude their road trip with a 1 p.m. game at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday.
