The annual Southland Conference Spring Meeting came to a close this week at the Gaylord Texan Resort with the league’s Board of Directors approving final adjustments to accommodate the new 14-member alignment that debuts July 1, and confirming future schedule format changes requested by the basketball coaches and approved by the Advisory Council.

Former Texas A&M-Corpus Christi student-athlete Shadrack Songok will be inducted into the Southland Conference’s Hall of Honor as the lone member of the Class of 2013, the league announced Wednesday.

McNeese State graduate student Alex Bruce-Littlewood and Stephen F. Austin senior Randi Plentl have been named the Southland Conference Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Student-Athletes of the Year, the league announced Tuesday.

McNeese freshman cross country runner Stephen Kerr continues to keep the Cowboys team in the spotlight when just a week after fellow teammate David Rooney earned All-American honors after finishing seventh at the NCAA Championships, Kerr won the junior division of the Irish Woodie DIY Inter County Cross Country Championships on Sunday.

The Southland Conference had two student-athletes earn All-American honors following their individual performances at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Louisville, Ky. Saturday. Lamar, McNeese State and Stephen F. Austin had representatives at the event.

McNeese State’s David Rooney made school history on Saturday afternoon when he finished seventh at the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Championships and became the first runner in McNeese history to earn all-American honors.

The Southland Conference had nine student-athletes recognized by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for All-Region awards for cross country in Division I following this weekend’s NCAA Regional Championships.

McNeese State's David Rooney continued his dominant season as he finished second at the NCAA Cross Country South Central Regional as one of four individuals representing the Southland Conference to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. Women's champion Lauren Smith of Stephen F. Austin and teammate Xavier Rodriguez earned bids as did Matt Johnsen of Lamar. Five schools placed in the top-10 on the men's side while Stephen F. Austin finished 10th on the women's side.
