Najera, Selman and Mersereau Earn SLC Weekly Soccer Honors

FRISCO, Texas ? The Southland Conference announced its first soccer players of the week for the 2008 season as UTSA juniors Veronica Najera and Kim Selman received the offensive and defensive awards respectively while Nicholls State sophomore Molly Mersereau was recognized as the goalkeeper of the week.

 

Offensive Player of the Week - Veronica Najera, UTSA

Najera scored the game-winning goal at Houston on Aug. 22. She then collected four points (two assists and one goal) in the win against Texas Southern on Aug. 29. Her 15 shots, two goals and two assist leads the team this season. Najera ranks first on the team with six points.

 

Honorable Mention: Alicia Gautreau, NICH; Kristin McDonald, SLU.

 

Defensive Player of the Week - Kim Selman, UTSA

Selman has helped UTSA’s defense record two shutouts this season. The first coming in the double overtime win at Houston. She was also part of the defense that held Texas Southern to three shots and no goals.

 

Honorable Mention: Keisha Brown, NICH; Sarah Cheung, SLU; Jessica Cotton, SFA.

 

Goalkeeper of the Week - Molly Mersereau, Nicholls State

Mersereau kept a clean sheet at Southern, holding the Jaguars scoreless through 69 minutes and logging four saves. She played the full 90 minutes at South Alabama making 16 saves and gave up one goal at Texas Southern and made four saves. She finished the first two weeks of the regular season with a .840 save percentage and leads the league with 21 saves.
