Capital One Bank/Southland Conference Commissioner?s Honor Roll Announced for 2009 Fall Semester

FRISCO, Texas - More than 700 student-athletes have been named to the Southland Conference Commissioner's Fall Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced Wednesday.

Seven of the conference's member schools saw at least 60 of their student-athletes named to the list. Of the 739 student-athletes honored, 100 boast a 4.0 grade-point average. The conference saw an improvement of 140 student-athletes from the 2008 fall honor roll to 2009.

Stephen F. Austin saw its fall honor roll selections increase by 15 from fall 2008 to lead the Southland with 81 honorees, including a league-best 18 student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA. Highlighting the list of academic honorees are football co-defensive player of the year Tim Knicky with a 3.3 GPA in kinesiology and soccer freshman of the year Kylie Louw with a 3.4 GPA in general studies.

Three honorees separate the top three Southland universities for most selections on the 2009 fall honor roll. A close second and third behind Stephen  F. Austin is McNeese State with 80 selections and Sam Houston State with 79.

Among the McNeese State recipients is football co-player of the year Derrick Fourroux with a 3.3 GPA in nursing. McNeese also increased its list of honorees by 11 from the previous fall honor roll and had nine student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA. Sam Houston State saw a significant increase as well from 69 in 2008 to 79 in 2009. The Bearkats also had eight student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA.

Central Arkansas landed 67 honorees, up from 58 a year ago. Among the fall recipients is two-time volleyball student-athlete of the year and two-time player of the year Chloe Smith, who holds a 4.0 GPA in digital film. Central Arkansas is second among Southland universities with 13 student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA on the fall honor roll.

Texas State also saw its honor roll selections increase from 2008 as the Bobcats jumped from 55 in 2008 to 65 in 2009. Leading the list of honorees for the Bobcats is the 2009 offensive player of the year Bradley George and soccer player of the year Britney Curry. A graduate student with a 3.4 GPA in geography, George was also named the football student-athlete of the year. Curry holds a 3.0 GPA in accounting. Texas State is the only league school to land two player of the year winners on the fall honor roll.

Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana also placed more than 60 student-athltes on the honor roll with 65 and 63, respectively. Northwestern had nine student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA while Southeastern turned in six. Among the Southeastern honorees include soccer student-athlete of the year Dana Mayer with a 4.0 GPA in biological sciences, and men's cross country student-athlete of the year Henry Rop with a 3.4 GPA in nursing.

Nicholls and Lamar landed 47 and 45 student-athletes on the honor roll, respectively. Among the Lamar honorees is volleyball freshman of the year Wendy Krell, who holds a 3.2 GPA in general studies. Lamar is tied with SFA with an increase of 15 honor roll recipients from fall 2008.

Rounding out the fall honor roll, UTSA had 38 honorees, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi landed 25 and UT Arlington had 20.

UTSA posted seven 4.0 GPA student-athletes. Leading the list of honorees for the Roadrunners is cross country female newcomer of the year Pernilla Savestrand with a 3.50 GPA.

The Islanders increased their number of honorees from 19 in 2008 to 25 in 2009. Among the fall honor roll selections for the Islanders is the women's cross country student-athlete of the year and female athlete of the year Anne Ronoh. A 3.0 GPA student in nursing, Ronoh led the Islanders to their third consecutive conference championship and is the first women's runner from A&M-Corpus Christi to take first place at the Southland cross country championships.

UT Arlington increased its fall honorees from 17 in 2008 to 20 in 2009. The Mavs had four student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA.

Presented by Capital One Bank, the honor roll recognizes student-athletes who have earned a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher and have been eligible to compete in his or her sport during the 2009 fall semester.
