Central Arkansas 82, Sam Houston State 63
CONWAY, Ark. - Central Arkansas took control early on Saturday with runs of 11-0 and 15-3 in the first half to build a commanding lead against Sam Houston State, then stretched it to as many as 25 in the second half and cruised to an 82-63 win over the Bearkats in the Farris Center.

With the win, the Sugar Bears (17-5, 7-2) collect their seventh straight victory and remain at least tied atop the Southland's East Division standings pending the result of Saturday night's game between Stephen F. Austin and Lamar. It was the fourth straight loss for the Bearkats (5-15, 2-6). UCA has now won five of the seven by double digits and its average margin of victory during the win streak is 13.7.

The Sugar Bears came out hot early, scoring 11 straight points in a span of 4:30 to take a 10-point lead, then followed it up with a 15-3 run over a five-minute span later in the half as they built a 39-21 lead with 2:10 to play in the first.

The Bearkats cut the lead to 13, but that would be the closest they'd get as UCA junior center Megan Moss hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key just before the buzzer to send the Sugar Bears into the locker room with a 45-29 advantage.

Three minutes into the second half, after a 3-pointer from freshman forward Westin Taylor and a steal and layup from freshman forward Megan Herbert, the Sugar Bears had built the lead to 21. The margin fluctuated between 23 and 17 for much of the half, with the UCA lead peaking at 25 with 7:19 to play on a pair of free throws from Herbert.

SHSU was able to shave 10 points off its deficit, getting back within 15 with just more than four minutes left, but it was far too late to make a difference. Four points from freshman center Chantel Moss in the final minute put UCA ahead 21 again before SHSU's Ray Alexander hit a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left to close out the scoring.

UCA once again held a decided rebounding advantage, getting 59 rebounds to SHSU's 42. For the week, the Sugar Bears outrebounded their opponents by 35. The Sugar Bears were also aided once again by free throws - hitting 23 to the Bearkats' 16. Over the last two games the Sugar Bears have outscored the opposition 58-23 at the line.

Herbert had 20 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Sugar Bears, extending her double-double streak to 22 games and putting her a step closer to the second-longest streak in NCAA history at any level. It was her 13th game of the year with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds.

For the week, she averaged 20 points and 14.5 rebounds and at 14.3 per game for the year is on pace to break UCA's records for most rebounds and highest rebounding average in a season. She needs to average just 10.4 the rest of the way to break Checola Seals' 19 year-old record for total rebounds set in 1990-91 when UCA was an NAIA school. Herbert has 314 with seven games to play and needs 73 to pass Seals' mark of 386.

At 14.3 rebounds per game, Herbert needs to average just 7.1 per game the rest of the way to eclipse Seals' record of 12.5 per game set that same season. She is on pace to have the fourth-highest rebound total in Southland history, the third-highest rebound average and the highest in 20 years, going back to 1990 when Northwestern State's Pam Hudson set both records with 15 rebounds per game and 436 total. She is also tied for the fifth-highest scoring average in UCA history and second-highest in the school's NCAA history.

Freshman forward Desiree' Rogers notched her third double-double of the season, putting up 15 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor added 11 and connected three times from outside the arc, giving her 55 made 3-pointers for the season - the 10th-highest total in UCA history. She needs 11 more to move into the top five and 18 more to break the record.

Sophomore guard Nakeia Guiden tied her career high with eight assists to go with eight points and five rebounds. Freshman guard Micah Rice also added six points, five rebounds and six assists.

Chanice Smith came off the bench to lead Sam Houston with 19 points. Alexander added 14. Brittany Brooks and Whitney Smith, the Bearkats' leading scorers coming in at a combined 26.1 points per game, were held to a total of 13 on 5-of-26 shooting.

After playing three of their last four at home, the Sugar Bears will take back to the road on Wednesday to do battle with UTSA, a team UCA has yet to beat since joining the league. UCA will then return home next Saturday for their WBCA Pink Zone game, a breast cancer awareness benefit game, against Northwestern State.
