Roadrunners Pick up First Conference Win
UTSA kicked off its conference season in dramatic fashion on Saturday, gutting out a come-from-behind 4-3 victory against Texas Pan American at the UTSA Tennis Center.

The Roadrunners won their third match in a row to start the spring, while the Broncs fell to 0-4 on the young season.

"After last season, we felt like we had something to prove," head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein said. "UTPA has the same guys from last year, but they are playing far, far better than they were last season. This was us last year, on the losing side of a close match with UTPA. This was a big win for us today."

The match kicked off in doubles competition, with the senior-freshman pairing of Rodrigo Morgado and Martin Ayala scoring a convincing 8-3 win over Beau and Brett Bernstein at No. 1. The Roadrunners then fell in both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches.

Senior Jorge Delgado got the Roadrunners back in the match quickly at the start of singles competition. He dismantled Irving with a dominating 6-1, 6-2, victory at No. 6. Morgado then gave the Birds a short-lived 2-1 lead with a win over Beau Berstein at No. 3 (6-2, 6-2). The Broncs battled back to tie the match at two when Brett Bernstein took out Brown at No. 2, 6-4, 6-4.

UTSA dropped its first match of the season on Sunday afternoon with a 4-3 defeat at the hands of the St. Edward's Hilltoppers.

Despite a few changes in the lineup, the Roadrunners continued their struggles in doubles competition against St. Edward's.

Junior Max Stratmann and freshman Tyler Brown traded service games with Brett Powers and Ned Boone and led 3-2 at the No. 3 spot. Powers and Boone then went on to break UTSA's serve twice to take a commanding 7-3 advantage before eventually taking the match, 8-5.

At No. 1, sophomore Pedro Zanotelli and freshman Martin Ayala paired up for the first time this season, posting an 8-4 victory over Ryan Wiggins and Justin Raiti and leaving the doubles point up for grabs with one match still in play.

Senior Rodrigo Morgado and junior Daniel Moreiras, also playing together for the first time this season, lost their No. 2 bout with Mick Walter and Boris Barrios, 9-7, giving the doubles point and a 1-0 lead to the Hilltoppers.

Early on in singles play, the Birds found themselves facing a 2-0 deficit after Zanotelli retired from his No. 5 contest after dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-3), and going down 1-0 in the second set. Senior Jorge Delgado got UTSA on the board with convincing win for the second straight day, defeating Bernard Lancaster 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4.

UTSA will be on the road for the next two weeks, traveling to Florida for matches against South Florida and Florida Atlantic on Feb. 12 and 13, respectively, followed by a trip to Austin to take on No. 9 Texas on Feb. 20.
