Briggs, McCloud Named Southland Track and Field Athletes of the Week

FRISCO, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi freshman BreAnna Briggs has been named the Southland Conference women's track and field athlete of the week, while Stephen F. Austin sophomore Nick McCloud has been named the men's track and field athlete of the week, the league office announced Wednesday.

Briggs, a native of Wasmego, Kan. (Wasmego High School) had three first place finishes on Saturday at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas. Briggs finished first in the 800, 1500 and 3000-meters. She also met the qualifying mark for the Southland Conference Outdoor meet for the 1500. She was the only Islander to win three individual events at the meet.

McCloud, a native of Tyler, Texas (Lee High School) set a school record in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles to advance to the finals at the Arkansas Last Chance Qualifier in Fayetteville, Ark.. In the finals, he shaved four-hundredths off his school-record time to finish second in the event. He is currently ranked 21st in the nation.

Honorable mention for this week's women's award goes to UTSA freshman Katie Bragg. For the men's award, honorable mention goes to UTSA freshman Richard Garrett Jr. A student-athlete must receive 25-percent of the votes from the league's SIDs in order to qualify for honorable mention.

Each school's SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
