Brooks Named Capital One Bank/Southland Conference Women?s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year
FRISCO, Texas - Sam Houston
State senior Brittany Brooks has been named the 2009-10 Capital One
Bank/Southland Conference Women's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year, the
league office announced Tuesday in conjunction with the release of the Women's
Basketball All-Academic Teams.
A
native of Spring, Texas, Brooks is the first Sam Houston State player to be
named women's basketball student-athlete of the year. A general studies major
with a 3.34 grade-point average, Brooks played an integral role in leading Sam
Houston to its highest win total (11) since 2000, and first Southland
tournament berth since 2004. A second-team all-conference selection, Brooks
started all 29 games in 2010 and finished fourth in scoring (15.3) in the
league. One of the better guards in the Southland, Brooks ranked third in
3-pointers per game (2.3) and 3-point percentage (.332). Her 3.7 assists per
game ranks sixth and 1.9 steals per game is seventh.
Three
universities tied for the most selections on the all-academic teams as Sam
Houston State, Northwestern State and Lamar landed two student-athletes on the
two teams.
Joining
Brooks on the all-academic team is teammate senior Ray Alexander. A health
major with a 3.00 GPA, Alexander makes her first career appearance on the
all-academic team.
Northwestern
State seniors Anna Cate Williams and Lyndzee Greene each received first-team
honors and is the only league team with two first-team members. Williams, a
CoSIDA District VI All-Academic selection, is a health and physical education
major with a 3.84 GPA. Greene holds a 3.74 GPA in hospitality management and
tourism and makes her second consecutive all-academic appearance.
Lamar
graduate Ashley Crawford and sophomore Kalis Loyd received first and
second-team honors, respectively. Crawford is the only Southland player
selected to the CoSIDA District VI first team. A kinesiology major, Crawford's
3.95 GPA is the highest among the all-academic selections. Loyd, a general
studies major with a 3.22 GPA, was a third-team all-conference selection and
makes her first career all-academic appearance.
Rounding
out the first-team honorees is Texas A&M-Corpus Christi senior Deziree
Green. A second-team CoSIDA District VI selection, she makes her third
consecutive appearance on the Southland all-academic teams. A kinesiology major
with a 3.50 GPA, Green is the first Islander women's basketball player selected
to three consecutive all-academic teams.
Remaining
second-team honorees include UTSA sophomore Whitney York, McNeese State junior
Kiara Johnson and Nicholls sophomore Jasmine Hoskins.
York,
a second-team all-conference selection, has a 3.12 GPA in management. Johnson
has a 3.11 GPA in childhood education and Hoskins is a nursing major with a
3.55 GPA. Each are making their first career appearance on the all-academic
teams.
The
Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from
each of the 12 member schools, voted for the student-athlete of the year.
The
student-athlete of the year award is presented to the one male and one female
student-athlete who achieve excellence in both academics and athletics. All
nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrated
achievement in athletics for at least two years at the nominating institution.
The
All-Academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information
directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland
university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed
one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at
least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic
squad.
Included
in Capital One Bank's support of the Southland Conference Academic Awards
Program is the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship, the All-Academic Teams,
the Student-Athlete of the Year, the Scholar-Athlete Award and the
Commissioner's Honor Roll.
