Southland Cross Country Begins Wednesday

FRISCO, Texas - UTSA opens the Southland Conference cross country season Wednesday at the Trinity Opener in San Antonio, Texas. The Roadrunners begin competition at 6:30 p.m.

UT Arlington's season starts Thursday at the Midwestern State Invitational in Wichita Falls, Texas. Nine other Southland Cross Country teams begin competition Friday with meets throughout the states of Texas and Louisiana.

Stephen F. Austin and Northwestern State compete in the Lumberjack Opener in Nacogdoches, Texas. McNeese State, Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana participate in the Cowboy Relay in Lake Charles, La. Lamar and Sam Houston State will run at the Johnny Morris Invitational hosted by the University of Houston on Friday. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi travels to Edinburg, Texas, for the UTPA Relays, while Texas State competes in the Baylor Twilight Invitational in Waco, Texas. Central Arkansas doesn't open its season until Sept. 10 at the UALR Meet in Little Rock, Ark.

After winning four consecutive conference championships, the Lamar men seek their fifth title in 2010. For the women, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the three-time defending conference championship, looks to maintain its Southland crown for another year. The top returning men's finisher from last year's conference meet, Joshua Sawe from McNeese State, clocked a time of 24:06 in the 8k a year ago. Junior Kayla Pratt from UTSA, returns as the women's top conference finisher with a time of 20:51 in the 6k.

This year's Southland Cross Country Championships is scheduled for Oct. 28, at the Bayou Din Golf Course in Beaumont, Texas, beginning at 9 a.m. For qualifying individuals and teams, the NCAA regional meet will be held at Baylor University on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 9 a.m., followed by NCAA Championships on Nov. 22.
