Kylie Louw Named Southland Conference Soccer Player of the Year

FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin junior midfielder Kylie Louw was named the 2011 Southland Conference Soccer Player of the Year for the second consecutive year by a vote of the league's head coaches and sports information directors, the conference office announced Tuesday in conjunction with the release of the all-conference soccer teams.

A native of Discovery, South Africa, Louw finished the regular season leading the league in assists (13), third in points per game (1.69) and fourth in points (27). This is Louw's second player of the year award and third first-team all conference honor. Louw started 15 of 16 games played and finished second on her team in points (27) and third in goals (7).

Stephen F. Austin, which claimed its sixth regular-season championship to earn the No. 1 seed entering this week's Southland Conference Soccer Tournament, holds a league-best six first-team all-conference team members. Texas State also has six all-conference selections and is ranked No. 2 entering the conference tournament. Lamar, Southeastern Louisiana and UTSA all have three honorees while Sam Houston State has one.

Joining Louw on the first team for Stephen F. Austin is Southland Conference Freshman of the Year Chelsea Raymond. Raymond, a native of Irving, Texas, leads the conference in shots (17), goals (17) and points (41). Additionally, Raymond is ranked fifth in the nation in goals per game (1.000) and sixth in points per game (2.41).

Other Ladyjacks earning first-team honors include junior midfielder Laura Sadler, senior defender Jordan King, sophomore goalkeeper Lacey Lee and junior defender Breanne Vernon. Sadler, a Coppell, Texas, native, was third on the team in points (20), goals (8) and assists (4). King, Vernon and Lee were part of a Ladyjacks defense that recorded a conference-best 12 shutouts and allowed just one goal in conference play. Lee started all 17 games in the net and recorded a league-best goals against average (0.44).

Stephen F. Austin head coach Tony Amato was voted the Southland Conference Coach of the Year after his second season with the Ladyjacks. Amato led the Ladyjacks to an undefeated regular season conference title and a school-record twelve consecutive wins.

Southeastern Louisiana's first-team selections include junior forward Maiya Cooper, sophomore midfielder Kelsey Salcido and senior defender Kyle MacIntosh. Cooper, a native of Hawthorne, Calif., was second in the league in points (30) and goals (12). Salcido, a native of Lakewood, Calif. ranked in goals (10) and points (28) in the conference. MacIntosh, a St. Catharine's Ontario, native, earned her second first-team selection and contributed to a defense that recorded eight shutouts.

Earning first-team honors for Texas State was sophomore forward Felicia Leask. Leask tied for fourth in the conference in goals (8) and ranked sixth in points (21). As a team, Texas State finished the season with just one loss in conference play and ranked second in the standings.

Rounding out the first-team selections is UTSA sophomore defender Anka Grotle. A native of Bremanger, Norway, Grotle anchored a defense that recorded seven shutouts and limited opponents to an average 1.46 goals per game.

Texas State had five second-team selections while Lamar had three. Rounding out second-team all-conference honorees was UTSA with two and Sam Houston State with one.

The Bobcats second-team honorees include senior midfielder Kelsey Bernard, junior defender Emma Staley, freshman defender Michelle Bucy, senior goalkeeper Lauren Frazier and junior defender Taylor Person. Bernard, a native of The Colony, Texas, started all 17 games and contributed to an offense that ranked third in the conference in goals (39). Staley, an Austin, Texas native, Bucy, a McKinney, Texas native and Person, a Georgetown, Texas native, were part of a Bobcat defense that recorded eight shutouts and limited opponents to a goals against average of .830. Frazier, a native of Round Rock, Texas, started 15 of 16 games in the net and recorded six shutouts.

Texas State also boasted the newcomer of the year in Andrea Mauk. Mauk, a native of Spring Branch, Texas, made appearances in all 18 games and posted one goal and three assists for the Bobcats.

Representing the Lady Cardinals on the second-team are forward Lisa Hance, midfielder Kristin Bos and defender Amber Thornhill. Hance, a native of Grapevine, Texas, led the team in points (21) and goals (5). Tying Hance for the team-lead in assists (5) was freshman midfielder Kristin Bos. Bos, a native of Valencia, Calif., started all 18 games played and was second on the team in points (15) and goals (5). Thornhill, a Katy, Texas native, also started all 18 games and contributed to a defense that allowed an average of only 1.40 goals against and posted six shutouts.

UTSA's second-team honorees include forwards Maria Jose Rojas and Liv Nyhegn. Rojas, a native of Santiago, Chile, started 15 of 16 games and led the Roadrunners in points (20) and ranked third in assists (4). Rojas and Nyhegn, a Middelfart, Denmark, native, shared the team-lead in goals (8). Nyhegn ranked second on the team in points (19) and recorded three assists.

Rounding out the second-team selections is Sam Houston State junior midfielder Kirby Zak. Zak, a native of Weatherford, Texas, started all 20 games and recorded  three goals and two assists for the Bobcats.  

The 2011 Southland Soccer All-Conference teams are comprised of 11 first-and- second team members and are chosen by vote of the league's head coaches and sports information directors.  The recipients are grouped by position and are placed by the number of votes received.
