Islanders Take Down Prairie View A&M in Season Opener

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team started out the 2012 season in strong fashion, taking a 7-0 victory over Prairie View A&M in a road match on Thursday afternoon. Next up for the Islanders will be the grand opening of the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center on Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Islanders host No. 70 Rice.

The Islanders are now 1-0 on the year with the decisive victory, while the Panthers fall to 0-2 on the year with the loss. The other loss for Prairie View came in 5-2 fashion against No. 6 Baylor on the road.

"I am very proud of the focus these girls showed today," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "We knew Prairie View had a much improved team that was very dangerous and saw they lost 5-2 to Baylor, who is Top 10 every year. We dug a couple holes for ourselves in doubles, but really fought hard to come back.

In doubles, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi made it a clean sweep, with Mirna Cicak and Doris Kuselj combining to win 8-4 at the No. 1 position, Stefania Nicolae and Mia Matuszak winning 9-7 at No. 2 and Sandra Burges and Chelsea Horan completing the round with an 8-2 final at the No. 3 position.

In singles action, the Islanders once again made their way through the match unscathed, taking all six matches in straight sets against a tough Prairie View team.

Baylor 5, Stephen F. Austin 1
WACO, Texas - Junior Antonia Kolovou recorded a dominating 6-0, 6-0, victory at No. 6 six singles but it was the only victory the Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team recorded against No. 5 Baylor Wednesday afternoon. The match, which was originally schedule to be played at Baylor, had to be moved to an indoor facility in Ennis, Texas.

"We gave the No. 5 team in the nation all it could handle, and were a few games from a 3-3 score going into doubles which is our strongest point," said head coach Patrick Sullivan. "I am proud of how hard we fought, and that we weren't intimidated at all by a final four team. "

Trailing 2-0 after Nos. 1-2 singles, freshman Elena Kordolaimi found herself locked in a battle at the No. 3 spot. After dropping the first set, the reigning Southland Player of the Week battled back to take the second set, 6-3, but Kordolaimi was unable to hold the momentum dropping the third set. In similar fashion, senior Alina Shazko forced a third set before bowing out to one of the country's top 80 players, Jordan Sanford, 6-0. 5-7, 7-5.
