Nicholls St., Central Arkansas Drop Midweek Matches
South Alabama 6, Nicholls State 1
MOBILE, Ala. - Junior Parija Maloo made an impressive debut for the Nicholls State University women's tennis team by winning both of her matches in the Colonels' opener against South Alabama, but the Jaguars proved to be too strong as they defeated Nicholls, 6-1, at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts on Thursday.
In doubles action, South Alabama (1-0) took the first two matches to claim the point. However, the Colonels (0-1) were able to avoid the sweep as Maloo, a native of Pune, India, teamed up with freshman Janna Leeuwerik for an 8-6 victory in the No. 1 pairing.
The Jaguars stretched to lead to 3-0 after the first two matches in singles play, but Maloo put Nicholls on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 slot against Chane Hines. Although South Alabama claimed two more points to seal the team win, freshman Marie Aubert almost picked up another mark for Nicholls at No. 3, falling 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 3-3 in a retired match.
The Colonels will return to action on Feb. 10 when they take on Abilene Christian.
