Saturday Southland TV Special Features Bearkats and Lady Cardinals
FRISCO, Texas - Sam Houston State will visit Lamar in Southland
Conference women's basketball action Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Toyota Game of
the Week on the Southland Conference Television Network.
The Bearkats are
9-4 in conference play and tied for the lead in the West Division after an
80-64 home-court win against Northwestern State last Wednesday. With the win
against the Lady Demons, Sam Houston punched its ticket to the Southland
Conference tournament in Katy, Texas, March 6-9. It is the Bearkats 12th time to
reach the conference tournament and third year in a year.
Sam Houston
State, which is 14-10 overall, has one of the best defenses in the conference,
holding opponents to a 34.2 field goal percentage, which also ranks in the top
15 nationally. In conference games, Sam Houston is the best rebounding and
assist team in the Southland. The Bearkats have a rebound margin of +7.2 and
dish out 15.5 assists per game in conference play. Leading Sam Houston on the
boards is junior Sequeena Thomas, who averages 14.5 rebounds per conference
contest. Thomas also averages 13.9 points per game against league opponents and

free-three shooters in the conference, making 81.6 percent of her attempts from
the charity stripe.

its seventh consecutive trip to the conference tournament on Wednesday. Despite
the 61-51 loss against Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday, the Lady Cardinals
benefited from other teams' misfortunes and earned a trip to Katy. Lamar is
15-12 overall and sits in third place in the East Division behind Central
Arkansas and McNeese State. Lamar paces the league in steals per contest (9.9),
led by junior Kalis Loyd, who averages 2.1 swipes a game. Loyd also leads the
Lady Cardinals in points (15.8), field goal percentage (47.1), rebounds (6.3)
and assists (2.8). Loyd ranks seventh on the Lamar all-time scoring list with
1,341 career points. Lamar has won five of its last six entering Saturday.
Lamar owns a
26-22 all-time advantage against Sam Houston, including a 99-88 win last season
in Huntsville, Texas. In recent years, the Lady Cardinals have dominated the
series against the Bearkats, winning seven of the last 10 contests.
Lincoln Rose will handle play-by-play
duties and host the Toyota Halftime Report. Legendary coach Van Chancellor, a
