Islanders? Road to 2010 Indoor Men's Team Tennis Finals Runs Through Waco
FRISCO, Texas ? The road to Charlottesville, Virginia, and the ITA National Team Indoor Championships will run through Waco for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men’s tennis team in 2010, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Wednesday following the completion of the ITA Men’s Kick-Off Weekend Draft.
Each of the ITA’s Top-15 Division I teams won the right to host a four-team regional. The Kick-Off Draft, held Wednesday in Skillman, N.J., allowed the remaining 45 teams, each of which are ranked among the ITA Top-75, to select a regional destination of their choosing in one of three separate rounds. The Islanders’ pick came in the second round, and they chose to head upstate to the home of the Baylor Bears, where they will be joined by TCU and Iowa.
The 2009 Southland Conference regular season and tournament champion Islanders are the conference’s only entrant into the field of 60, which will be cut down to 15 following the regional round. Regional champions will be determined by single elimination, with the No. 1 team at each site facing off against the No. 4 team and No. 2 taking on No. 3. In Waco, the top-seeded Bears will take on No. 4 Iowa while No. 2 TCU clashes with No. 3 A&M-Corpus Christi.
The winners and losers of both matches will play one another the following day, and the 15 schools that come out of the competition unscathed will be invited to play in the 2010 ITA National Team Indoor Championships from Feb. 12-15 at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville.
