FRISCO, Texas - UT Arlington junior Jeff Rodriguez has been named the Southland Conference men's track and field athlete of the week, while McNeese State junior La'Shantena Rounds was named the conference's women's track and field athlete of the week, the league office announced Wednesday.

Rodriguez, a Fort Worth, Texas (Fossil Ridge H.S.), native, set a school record in the pole vault, clearing 17-feet, 5 1/2 inches at the Varsity Apartments Invitational in Wichita, Kan. Rodriquez took first place in the event by more than a foot and has now won three of four events this season.

Rounds, a Baton Rouge, La. (Southern Lab), native, set a school record in the weight throw at the Jeff Davis Bank Indoor II hosted by McNeese State, tossing the implement 60-5 1/4. Both the weight throw and the shot put (46-0 3/4) were career bests for Rounds, who now ranks No. 64 in the nation and No. 1 in the Southland.

Honorable mention for this week's men's award goes to McNeese State graduate runner Alex Bruce-Littlewood, Southeastern Louisiana sophomore jumper Phillippe Moore, UTSA distance medley relay runners senior Cole Reveal, sophomore Chrisshun Jamerson, sophomore Brady Hand and senior Albert Cardenas, and Texas State junior Logan Cunningham. For the women's award, honorable mention went to Sam Houston State junior hurdler Sabrina Starr, Southeastern Louisiana sophomore athlete Nia Stewart, UTSA freshman sprinter Shahira Ehiemua and Texas State senior runner Sandra Venegas.

A student-athlete must receive 25-percent of the votes from the league's SIDs in order to qualify for honorable mention. Each school's SID nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
