FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi senior first baseman Larissa Martin and Texas State freshman pitcher Chandler Hall were named the Southland Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the week respectively by vote of the league’s sports information directors. Following is a look at their award winning performances.

 

Martin led the Islanders to a 5-1 record on the week as TAMUCC hosted Houston Baptist during the week and hosted the Corpus Christi Invitational over the weekend.  Martin hit .429 on the week with a triple and seven RBI.  Martin walked twice, got hit by a pitch twice, and added three sacrifice hits while not striking out at all during the week.  She led the Islanders in RBIs and batting average for the week.  Martin had a two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning against Indiana State to tie the game and send it to extra innings, where the Islanders eventually won 6-7 in eight innings.

 

Hall went a perfect 3-0 on the week to lead Texas State to a 3-1 week-record over two Big 12 teams and  No. 14 C-USA squad Houston. She led the Bobcats comeback win against Texas as they came from three down to beat the Longhorns, 9-6, on the road and earning her first collegiate victory. In the, 5-1, win over Oklahoma State, Hall pitched five innings committing only one error and serving up five strikeouts. Hall returned to the mound again against No. 14 Houston and led the Bobcats to an upset victory over the Cougars, 2-0. She pitched all seven innings allowing a mere two hits, while recording zero errors and tallying seven strikeouts. Hall pitched a total of 14 innings allowing only four runs, while serving up 13 strikeouts on the week. She ranks second in the SLC in wins (3) and second in strikeouts per game (8.00).

 

This week’s hitter honorable mentions are Kodi Butler, NICH; Katie Duhe, SLU; Luisa Escobar, UCA; Alex Newton, TXST; Sarah Parich, SHSU. Pitcher honorable mentions are Monika Covington, SFA; Lacey Gros, NICH; Danye’ Holmes, UTSA; Addie Tallman, AMCC. To receive an honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland softball sports information directors.

 

Each school’s SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for their own player.
