Southland Conference Softball Tournament Day One
No. 6 seed Nicholls State advanced to Friday with its second win of the day, as Amy Thibodaux's two home run night helped the Colonels eliminate No. 3 UTSA 3-2 in 10 innings. In game three today, No. 4 seed Stephen F. Austin got its first SLC Tournament win since 1990 as it eliminated No. 5 McNeese State 8-0 in six innings. In game two, No. 6 Nicholls State eliminated No. 7 Sam Houston State, the defending SLC Tournament champions, 2-1. In the first game of the day, No. 5 seed McNeese State eliminated No. 8 Southeastern La., 5-4.
SLC Tournament Game Four -- No. 6 Nicholls State 3, No. 3 UTSA 2 (10 Innings)
SAN MARCOS, Texas ? No. 6 Nicholls State eliminated No. 3 UTSA 3-2 in 10 innings in game four of the league’s tournament tonight behind two home runs from Amy Thibodaux, as she became the school’s all-time leading home run hitter. The Colonels now advance to meet No. 2 UT Arlington at 4 p.m., in game five tomorrow.
With the win, Nicholls State completed a 2-0 day and improves to 30-27 on the season.
UTSA ends its season at 25-25.
Kat Harrell homered to start the game for the Colonels, giving them an early 1-0 advantage.
UTSA tied the game in the second, as Kelly Cato doubled to start the fram and then scored on a fielding error by Harrell.
The Roadrunners took a 2-1 lead in the fourth as Cassie Miller homered to left.
Then with the Colonels down to their final out and two strikes in the top of the seventh, Thibodaux sent her 13th home run of the season over the left field fence to knot the game at 2-2.
Then in the 10th, Thibodaux hit her 14th home run of the season that proved to be the game winner, as she became the school’s all-time leader with 30 in her career, surpassing Karen Allen’s 29 total.
Krystalin Ensimger (10-13) got the win, working all 10 innings and striking out three.
Amanda Nikolenko (11-16) took the loss for the Roadrunners, allowing eight hits while striking out three.
SLC Tournament Game Three ? No. 4 Stephen F. Austin 8, No. 5 McNeese State 0 (Six Innings)
SAN MARCOS, Texas ? No. 4 seed Stephen F. Austin got its first SLC Tournament win since 1990 today, eliminating No. 5 McNeese State with a 8-0 six inning run rule victory in game three today.
With the win, the Ladyjacks improve to 34-23 overall and advance to game six of the league’s tournament tomorrow against No. 1 seed Texas State at 6:30 p.m.
McNeese State ends its season at 23-36.
The Ladyjacks got three runs in the first inning, on a RBI double from Jessica Tullos and a two-run home run from Briana Bishop.
SFA put four more on the board in the bottom of the fifth, getting a two RBI singles from Bishop and from Moriah Davis.
The game’s final run came on a RBI fly out to right field by Kendal Harper.
Monika Covington (18-12) limited the Cowgirls to five hits, while striking out eight.
SLC Tournament Game Two -- No. 6 Nicholls State 2, No. 7 Sam Houston State 1
SAN MARCOS, Texas - No. 6 Nicholls State elminated No. 7 Sam Houston State, the defending SLC Tournament champions in game two of the league tournament today, 2-1.
The Colonels improve to 29-27 and advance to game four to meet No. 3 UTSA at 6:30 p.m., tonight.
Sam Houston State ends its season at 30-31.
The Colonels took a 1-0 lead in the third, on a RBI double from Danielle Clayton that scored Kat Harrell, who singled with one out.
Nicholls State then added another run in the bottom of the sixth, on a RBI single by Rachel Pugh.
The Bearkats made the score 2-1 in the seventh on a RBI single to left field. But with the game tying run at third and the game winning run at second, Tanya Hooser sttruck out swining to end the game.
Lacey Gros (9-3) got the win, working 6.2 innings and striking out four. Krystalin Ensminger got the final out for her second save of the season.
SLC Tournament Game One -- No. 5 McNeese State 5, No. 8 Southeastern La. 4
SAN MARCOS, Texas ? McNeese State’s Molly Guidry’s RBI single down the left field in the bottom of the seventh inning line gave the Cowgirls a 5-4 victory over No. 8 seed Southeastern Louisiana in game one of the SLC Tournament today.
With the win, McNeese State, the No. 5 seed in this year's tournament, improves to 23-35 advances to meet No. 4 seed Stephen F. Austin in game three of the SLC Tournament at 4 p.m., today.
Southeastern Louisiana’s season ends at 27-25.
The Cowgirls took a 1-0 lead in the third. Lindsey Langer walked to start the inning and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Liz Morvant. Megan Beard then singled to left field to score Langer.
McNeese State got three more in the fourth. With one out, Guidry singled and stole second, before scoring on a single up the middle by Corbello. The Cowgirls then loaded the bases, before Jenny Clay had a two RBI single up the middle to make the score 4-0.
In the sixth, the Lions got a two RBI double from Heather Sherrill off the left field wall to make the score 4-2 and then tied the game on a two RBI single combined with an error by Cowgirl right fielder Beard.
Then in the seventh, Beard reached on a fielding error with one out and went to second on a sinle by Rachel King and then to third on a fielding error by Lion first baseman Tamara Ladiner. King then lined the game winning single down the left field line to win the game for the Cowgirls.
