			FRISCO, Texas - The
Southland Conference Television Network has been nominated for a College Sports
Media Award for its production of the Sam Houston State vs. Northwestern State
football game last fall. Six broadcasts are up for the honor in the live
game/event category of the collegiate athletics division.
The
Southland will be seeking its second CSMA trophy in its second time to be
nominated. Following the 2009-10 school year, the conference won for its
coverage of McNeese State vs. Stephen F. Austin football in the collegiate
athletics division. The conference opted to enter the professional division in
2010-11, competing against national networks, and earned honorable mention
honors.
"We're
thrilled to be considered among the best in college sports television," Chris
Mycoskie, the conference's director of television and electronic media, said.
"There are a lot of people who deserve credit, including commissioner Tom
Burnett, everyone in the Southland office, plus all those behind the scenes and
on the air. The network's goal is to not to be nominated for awards, but to
serve our institutions, coaches and student-athletes. Still, this type of honor
is certainly special."
The
Southland Conference Television Network began in 2008 and is now available on
more than 20 affiliates across the region, plus nationwide on ESPN3 and Fox
College Sports. During the 2011-12 school year, the network produced 11 live
football broadcasts, followed by 15 basketball broadcasts. In addition, the
network had live coverage of the Southland soccer and volleyball tournament
championship matches.
This
edition of the College Sports Media Awards saw a 45 percent increase in total
entries from the previous year. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges
and announced on June 6 in Atlanta. Sports Video Group and the National
Association of College Directors of Athletics administer the awards.
"Receiving
a nomination for a SVG College Sports Media Award is an honor in itself and the
Southland Conference is very deserving," College Sports Video Summit chairman
Tom Buffolano said. "The commitment to providing their fans with a high quality
game production each week is a testament to their leadership and vision."
Other
nominees in the live game/event category include Baylor, Notre Dame, Ole Miss
and the Rochester Institute of Technology, which has two productions up for the
award.
The
Southland also received honorable mention this year for its football open
animation in the promotion category.
