FRISCO, Texas – Lamar senior guard Gia Ayers has been named Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Ayers helped lead Lamar to win over Nicholls and McNeese State to push the Lady Cardinals to 3-1 in league play, only one game out of first place. The senior from Bryan, Texas (Bryan H.S.), led the team in assists in both games with eight against the Colonels and six against the Cowgirls. In the Lady Cardinals’ 72-58 win over McNeese, Ayers recorded a game-high 20 points and put Lamar in the lead for good halfway in the second half with a four-point play. In the two games, Ayers averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 assists, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals, and she finished the week with a 2.2 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Honorable mention this week goes to Stephen F. Austin junior forward Tierany Henderson and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi senior guard Jasmine Shaw. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland women’s basketball sports information directors.

Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
