Treece, Trujillo Named Southland Baseball Players of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Oral Roberts sophomore right-hander Guillermo Trujillo has been named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week and Central Arkansas senior shortstop Justin Treece has been named the Southland Hitter of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Trujillo held the league’s most prolific offense to just two hits in a complete game shutout against McNeese State. The sophomore from Chihauhau, Mexico (Franklin H.S.), went the distance of the second game of the doubleheader against the Cowboys and led ORU to the 2-0 win. Trujillo allowed two hits and issued two walks while striking out five hitters in his first complete game of his career. It was the first time all season McNeese had been shutout. Trujillo improved to 1-1 on the year and lowered his ERA to 2.63.
Treece helped lead Central Arkansas to a three-game sweep of No. 16 Sam Houston State, hitting .364 (4-for-11) with four runs scored and three RBI against the Bearkats. The senior from Sherwood, Ark. (Sylvan Hills H.S.), started the week with a two-game set against Arkansas-Pine Bluff with six hits, including two doubles, and three RBI and three runs scored. He had multi-hit games in four of the Bears’ five contests. Treece also reached base three times with walks and stole two bases. On the week, Treece hit .556 (10-for-18) with seven runs scored, six RBI and two doubles. Treece and the Bears picked up 18-12 and 13-1 wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and 9-7, 4-2 and 6-4 wins over Sam Houston.
Honorable mention for hitter of the week goes to Stephen F. Austin senior designated hitter Mackenzie Handel, Southeastern Louisiana freshman centerfielder Jacob Steward and Northwestern State sophomore outfielder Cort Brinson. Honorable mention for pitcher of the week goes to Central Arkansas junior right-hander Chris Caudle, Nicholls senior left-hander Marc Picciola, Northwestern State senior right-hander Steven Spann and McNeese State sophomore right-hander Kaleb Fontenot.
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
