UIW’s Walker Named Southland Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – UIW sophomore guard Jontrell Walker has been named the Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league office announced Monday.
 
Walker averaged 24.0 points and 4.5 assists in two games for week as UIW went 1-1 with a marquee win at St. John’s. Against Our Lady of the Lake, the sophomore from Aurora, Ill. (West Aurora H.S.), scored a season-high 28 points while dishing out five assists. In the Cardinals’ 73-51 win over St. John’s, Walker added 20 points and four assists. For the week, Walker went a perfect 18-for-18 from the free throw line and has now made his last 39 attempts from the charity stripe. He currently leads the nation with a 97.6 (41 of 42) free throw percentage.
 
Honorable mention this week goes to Sam Houston State junior center Aurimas Majauskas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior forward Rashawn Thomas and Houston Baptist senior guard Anthony Odunsi.
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
