BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Stephen F. Austin men and women claimed the team titles at the 2015 Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Tuesday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

For the Lumberjacks, it is their third Southland indoor championship in school history to go with titles won in 2013 and 2005. The Ladyjacks won their eighth overall women’s indoor title, the most of any current or former Southland program. Stephen F. Austin won the women’s title from 2009-13 as well as 2005-06.
 
Stephen F. Austin held a commanding 18 point lead over Sam Houston State after six events on the opening day of the men’s championship. The Lumberjacks picked up where it left off Tuesday as sprinters led the way down the final stretch of the meet.
 
The final day of competition started with Tyler Adams of Sam Houston State taking the men’s heptathlon with a score of 5,221 points. Adams broke the Southland indoor championship and Birmingham Crossplex heptathlon 1,000-meter run record with a time of 2:37.62. He took first in the high jump, leaping 6-08 feet (2.03m), and in the long jump with a mark of 22-11.75 feet (7m). Cody Rhodes of Stephen F. Austin finished second with a time of 2:40.31, which also broke the previous record. The Bearkats recorded a total of 17 points in the event as Jay Roberson clocked in at 2:50.31 for third.
 
In the men’s weight throw, Southeastern Louisiana swept the top three spots as Alexander Young broke the championship record with a toss of 69-11.75 feet (21.33m). Jonathan Kinchen was second at 62-06.50 feet (19.06m) and Brett Olsen was third with a mark of 60-09.25 (18.52m). The Lions earned a total of 28 points in the event.
 
Stephen F. Austin and Northwestern State each picked up 10 points in the men’s 60-meter hurdles with Brent Giddens claiming first for the Demons in a time of 8.13. Kerry Gleason placed second for the Lumberjacks with a time of 8.19 and DeAndre Burns came in seventh at 8.30. Sam Houston State’s William Stark earned third place with his 8.21 finish.
 
The Bearkats’ Justin Jenkins captured the men’s 60-meter dash in a time of 6.78 to give Sam Houston an additional 10 points.
 
Lamar scored 21 points in the men’s mile as Sam Stabler won the race at 4:09.48. Stuart Ferguson (4:10.71) finished third for the Cardinals while Tobias Riker (4:12.68) was fourth.
 
Abilene Christian’s Daniel Block won the men’s 800-meter with a time of 1:50.01, while Sam Houston State recorded 12 points in the race with a second-place finish by Jeffrey Moore at 1:51.58.
 
Northwestern State had a strong showing in the men’s triple jump as Aaron Williams won the event with a jump of 51-01 feet (5.57m) and Zhaquan Porter came in third at 49-01 feet (14.96m). The Demons scored 16 points in the event.
 
Rosen Daniel claimed the men’s 200-meter dash for Abilene Christian in a time of 21.32, while Stephen F. Austin picked up 15 points in the 400 meters with Cass Brown-Stewart taking first. Brown-Stewart’s time of 46.49 was both a Birmingham Crossplex and meet record. Sam Houston State’s Rodney Jones (46.97) and Abilene Christian’s Rosen Daniel (47.01), who finished second and third, also broke the previous meet record of 47.34.
 
Lamar swept the men’s 3,000-meter run with Sam Stabler, Alex Dunbar and Jan Lukas Becker claiming the top three spots to give the Cardinals 24 points in the event. Stephen F. Austin was able to claim five points with finishes at fifth and ninth.
 
The Lumberjacks had a very impressive showing to end the championship as the 4x400-meter relay team of Jonathon Joe, Josh Taylor, My’Lik Kerley and Cass Brown-Stewart set a Southland championship record of 3:10.86. Central Arkansas (3:12.35) and Abilene Christian (3:12.51) also broke the previous meet record.
 
Sam Stabler was the men’s high point scorer with 22.5 total points after his first-place finishes in the 3,000-meter run and the mile.
 
The Stephen F. Austin women scored 132.5 points and beat Sam Houston State by 14.5 points. Lamar was third with 106 points, while Abilene Christian finished fourth with 69 points.
 
In the first completed women’s event of the day, Danielle Demas of Sam Houston State took first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.30 to give the Bearkats 10 points.
 
Northwestern State scored 16 points in the women’s triple jump as Porsha Thomas (39-11.25 ft.) and Breann Denson (38-09.75 ft.) took first and third.
 
In the women’s 60-meter dash, the Ladyjacks’ Brarysheyia Simpson claimed first place in a time of 7.58 as Stephen F. Austin recorded 17 total points in the event with Chasity Clark (7.64) and Aliyah Davis (7.68) finished fifth and sixth.
 
The Ladyjacks were dominant in the 200-meter dash as Chasity Clark took first with a time of 24.29, Aliyah Davis claimed third at 24.57 and Brarysheyia Simpson fourth with 24.58.
 
Abilene Christian’s Kimone Green captured the women’s 400-meter dash, posting a time of 55.24. Sam Houston State got 17 points in the race as Jordan Grady took second with a time of 55.50 and the Bearkats got finishes at fourth and fifth by Ruth Amaku and Kodii Church. The 800 meters spotlighted Lamar’s Verity Ockenden who ran the race in 2:13.09.
 
Stephen F. Austin won both the women’s pole vault and the high jump as NCAA record holder Demi Payne posted a Southland indoor championship record of 14-00.50 (4.28m). Melai Carter won the high jump, leaping for 5-08.50 feet (1.74m).
 
Keona Jackson of Northwestern State threw for 49-11.25 feet (15.22m) to win the women’s shot put.
 
Lamar took the top two spots and three of the top four in the women’s mile led by Minttu Hukka (4:51.69) in first place and Verity Ockenden (4:52.20) second. Rana Ryan of SFA was third at 4:53.82 as the Cardinals’ Louise Webb finished fourth.
 
Jannika John of Lamar set a meet record in the 3,000-meter run as she clocked in at 9:30.98 and won the race. The Cardinals swept the event, recording a total of 24 points with Leigh Lattimore taking second at 9:46.14 and Verity Ockenden third with a time of 9:49.12.
 
Sam Houston State won the women’s 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:43.37, while Stephen F. Austin (3:44.46) finished second and Abilene Christian took home third (3:45.65).
 
Verity Ockenden of Lamar was the women’s high point scorer, recording a total of 24 points throughout the championship.
 
For student-athletes who have qualifying marks, the 2015 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held Friday and Saturday, March 13-14 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, hosted by the University of Arkansas.
