Fisher Named Southland Conference Baseball Student-Athlete of the Year
FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana junior first baseman Jameson Fisher has been named the Southland Conference Baseball Student-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced Wednesday in conjunction with the release of the All-Academic Baseball Teams.
Fisher, a native of Zachary, La. (Zachary H.S.), is a kinesiology major with a 3.38 grade-point average. The Lions’ offensive leader ranks in the top 13 in six categories throughout Division I baseball. Fisher is ranked first in on-base percentage (.588), second in batting average (.424), seventh in sacrifice flies (8), 11th in bases on balls (54) and slugging percentage (.693), and 13th in RBIs (66).
Fisher finished the season having reached base in 51-consecutive games. He had 28 multi-hit games, including 10 games with three hits and a four-hit performance against Alcorn State. He also tallied 16 multi-RBI games. The Southland Conference Player of the Year was the league’s first draft selection in the 2016 MLB Draft, going in the fourth round to the Chicago White Sox (116 pick). He is the 21st Lion to be drafted in program history.
Five student-athletes were automatic selection by virtue of being either a first-team all-conference selection or voted to the CoSIDA academic all-district team. The league placed two student-athletes on the CoSIDA Academic All-District teams. Fisher was joined by McNeese sophomore second baseman Joe Provenzano. Fisher was also a first-team all-conference selection with teammate sophomore pitcher Mac Sceroler. Lamar senior shortstop Stijn van der Meer and senior right-hander Will Hibbs we’re also first-team all-conference selections.
Ten league teams had at least one representative on the all-academic teams. Southeastern placed five total players with four on the first team and one on the second team. McNeese also had five selections between the two teams. Lamar had three selections while Nicholls, Central Arkansas, Houston Baptist and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi each had two selections. Sam Houston State, New Orleans and Northwestern State each had one representative on the all-academic teams.
Established in the 2002-03 academic year, the conference honors one student-athlete from each of the 17 championship sports who achieves excellence in academics, athletics and community/campus service.
The student-athlete of the year, selected by the league's awards committee, must have attained athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution, possess at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and demonstrate extracurricular service at his campus and or community.
The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
