Ramsey, Arzaluz, Latham Named Soccer Players of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana junior midfielder Lauren Ramsey and sophomore midfielder Vanessa Arzaluz and Northwestern State junior goalkeeper Alex Latham were named the Southland Conference Women’s Soccer Players of the Week presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league announced Tuesday. Ramsey earned offensive honors while Arzaluz received defensive accolades and Latham was tabbed the top goalkeeper for the week.
 
Offensive Player of the Week – Maggie Ramsey, Southeastern Louisiana
Maggie Ramsey scored both of the Lady Lions’ goals in a 2-0 win at Jackson State on Sunday. The junior midfielder led the team with six shots, three on goal. She played a solid midfield in a 4-1 loss at Memphis Friday while taking a team-high four shots, one on goal. Her corner kick led to Southeastern’s lone goal against the Tigers.
 
Honorable Mention: Jordan Slim, Central Arkansas.

Defensive Player of the Week – Vanessa Arzaluz, Southeastern Louisiana
Vanessa Arzaluz started both games for the Lady Lions in the opening weekend of soccer competition. The sophomore midfielder scored Southeastern’s lone goal against Memphis with her only shot of the match in a 4-1 loss at Memphis on Friday.
 
Honorable Mention: Shay Johnson, Abilene Christian.

Goalkeeper of the Week – Alex Latham, Northwestern State 
Alex Latham set career highs in saves in consecutive games, making 12 saves at Arkansas-Little Rock and 13 saves at No. 22 Ole Miss. Under constant duress in both games – UALR took 24 shots and Ole Miss 31. The junior made diving save after diving save, coming off her line on more than a handful of occasions to stop breakaways. Ole Miss had one goal in the first 60 minutes, scored two in the latter stages of the match. Latham leads the nation with 25 saves in her first two matches.
 
Honorable Mention: Sydney Newton, Abilene Christian; Anna Hughes, Central Arkansas.
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player. To receive honorable mention, a student-athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
