Gilpin, Walker Named Volleyball Players of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior Brittany Gilpin was named Southland Conference Women’s Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week while Stephen F. Austin senior Justice Walker was named Defensive Player of the Week presented by UniversalCoin.com to begin the 2016 season, the league announced Monday.
 
Offensive Player of the Week – Brittany Gilpin, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Giplin set a pair of career highs in the Islanders’ win against UT-Rio Grande Valley at the Baylor Invitational, recording 20 kills and 16 digs for her first double-double of the season. The Houston, Texas (Westside HS), native led A&M-Corpus Christi in kills twice during the tournament. Gilpin totaled 37 kills in 11 sets over the weekend.
 
Honorable Mention:  Rachel Sharp, Central Arkansas; Jordyn Vaughn, Sam Houston State; Keke Richards, New Orleans; Abby McIntyre, Stephen F. Austin.
 
Defensive Player of the Week – Justice Walker, Stephen F. Austin
Walker earned a spot on the Country Inn & Suites Green Bay Invitational All-Tournament Team after her performance on both sides of the net. The Fort Worth, Texas (Arlington Lamar HS), native leads the conference in blocks and blocks per set at 15 and 1.50, respectively, after the opening weekend. Walker also recorded 22 kills in ten sets for the Ladyjacks.

Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
