FRISCO, Texas – A total of 1,008 student-athletes were named to the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the fall 2016 semester, the league announced Friday.
This season’s list included an impressive 201 perfect 4.00 grade point averages across the sports of men’s cross country, women’s cross country, football, soccer and volleyball.
"As has been the case in recent years, Southland Conference student-athletes have again set a great standard for academic achievement," league commissioner Tom Burnett said.
"Our athletic departments are continuing to create opportunities for success in the classroom, and our student-athletes are taking advantage of them as they prepare for postgraduate accomplishments."
Abilene Christian led the way with 104 student-athletes, including 32 with 4.00 GPAs. Northwestern State named 101 honorees with a total of 22 Demon and Lady Demon athletes posting a perfect semester GPA.
UIW and Central Arkansas followed with 95 and 93 selections, respectively. Nine Cardinals posted 4.00 GPAs through the fall while the Bears and Sugar Bears had 17.
Sam Houston State (89), Stephen F. Austin (88), Houston Baptist (83) and McNeese (81) all had over 80 student-athletes named to the Fall 2016 Honor Roll.
The Bearkats had 23 athletes with a perfect GPA while the Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks had 19 with perfect fall semesters. The Huskies named 15 student-athletes with a 4.00 while McNeese had 14.
Lamar earned 75 spots on this semester’s honor roll while Southeastern Louisiana named 72. The Cardinals had 17 perfect GPAs while the Lions and Lady Lions boasted 11.
Nicholls named 69 athletes to the fall list with nine 4.00 GPAs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi earned 36 spots with 10 perfect GPAs while New Orleans named 22 student-athletes to the honor roll with two perfect fall semesters.
All five Southland Student-Athletes of the Year were represented on this semester’s honor roll, including Frederico Gasbarri (Lamar men’s cross country), Ana Moreno (Sam Houston State women’s cross country), Marlon Walls (Stephen F. Austin football), Brittany Gilpin (A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball) and Kelsie Roberts (Abilene Christian soccer).
The Southland Conference Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll acknowledges participants in all sports sponsored by the league and its member institutions. The honor roll recognizes student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA. Student-athletes, nominated by their respective academic advisors, must have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during the academic year in which the nomination occurs.
