FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Kevin Bettendroffer was selected as the Southland Men’s Tennis Player of the Year, the league announced Thursday with its all-conference teams.

Bettendroffer earned the conference’s first-team doubles honors alongside a placement on second-team singles. Both of his all-conference selections were in the top flight. The senior from Saint-Maximin-la-Siante-Baume, France, went 4-1 in No. 1 doubles in league play with teammate William Mottet, who was named to the first-team in singles at the No. 3 slot. In No. 1 singles, Bettendroffer lost just one match as his Islanders squad took a share of the 2017 regular season championship. He is the first Player of the Year from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi since Peter Nagy won it three times in a row from 2013-15.

It was the same name, but a different year for the league’s Freshman of the Year. Abilene Christian’s Jonathan Sheehy claimed this year’s accolade after a 4-1 conference season in No. 2 singles that helped him be named to all-conference second team. Sheehy is the younger brother and teammate of the 2016 Southland Freshman of the Year, Josh Sheehy.

Federico Boscarino of New Orleans was named the Newcomer of the Year. The sophomore transfer from Jackson State compiled two wins in the league’s No. 2 singles and competed in the top slot of doubles competition throughout the conference season. Overall, the Tucuman, Argentina, native went 7-7 in singles play and 8-5 in doubles.

Abilene Christian’s Hutton Jones captured his first Southland Coach of the Year – in men’s or women’s tennis – award since joining the league. Jones’ Wildcat squad was part of the three-way tie for regular season champs with a 4-1 league record. His team finished the regular season 17-9 heading into the Ojai Invitational this weekend.

Michael Feucht of Lamar was named to his third-straight first team. The senior claimed first-team singles at No. 1 with a 4-1 league record and is joined on the team by fellow Cardinal Nikita Lis at No. 2. The Islanders owned the other four spots on the team: Mottet (No. 3), Paul Cook (No. 4), Carlos Pedrosa Cuevas (No. 5) and Gonzalo Achondo (No. 6).

Lamar landed the other two selections on the first-team doubles side next to Bettendroffer and Mottet. Feucht and Benny Schweizer took the No. 2 slot with a perfect 4-0 finish while teammates Juuso Laitinen and Logan Powell won at No. 3 with their three victories in conference play.

The 2017 All-Southland Conference men's tennis teams are comprised of six first-team and six second-team singles members along with three first-team and three second-team doubles squads. Teams are chosen by vote of the league's head coaches and sports information directors. Recipients are placed on the teams by the number of votes received. Voting panelists are not permitted to vote for their own student-athletes.

First serve of the 2017 Southland Men's Tennis Tournament is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center in Beaumont, Texas. The championship match has a 11 a.m. start for Sunday. More information can be found by visiting the tournament homepage at southland.org/tennis17.
