Paul Obermann Named Men’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Year

FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana senior Paul Obermann was announced the winner of Men’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Year, in conjunction with the 2016-17 All-Academic team.
 
Obermann, an All-Conference Second Team selection from Mühlhausen, Germany, led the Lions with a 74.03 stroke average over 30 rounds this season. He carded 10 rounds at par or better, two rounds in the 60s, six top 20 finishes and three top 10s. He was ranked 481st by Golfstat going into the conference championship where he finished 10th (230, +14).
 
He led the Lions with a 73.58 stroke average in four fall tournaments in 2016. He posted a pair of top-10 finishes with a low round of 68, the best by a Lion in the fall. He tied for sixth at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate and tied for 10th at the ULM Duck Commander Intercollegiate. He was named to the Fall 2016 Southeastern Louisiana President’s List with a 3.97 GPA in Finance. Obermann was one of three senior student-athletes to be honored for having the highest GPA in the Southeastern athletic department among graduating seniors.
 
In addition, Obermann was named a member of the CoSIDA Academic All-District team along with Stephen F. Austin senior Baxter Ward. Ward, a two-time team captain from Armidale, Australia, posted a 74.84 scoring average in 23 rounds played. He carded a low round of 70, seven rounds of par-or-better and one top-20 finish. He earned President’s List distinction in the fall – the seventh of his SFA career. Ward posted a 4.00 GPA with a major in business economics.
 
Fellow Lumberjack Major Monzingo also earned All-Academic selection this year. The senior out of Trophy Club, Texas posted a 3.25 GPA with a marketing major. An All-Conference First Team selection, Monzingo led SFA with a 73.42 scoring average with 12 par-or-better rounds. He now ranks seventh all-time in program history for lowest single season scoring average. He notched three top-10 individual finishes, placing second at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational with a season-low 67.
 
Central Arkansas’ Louis Tomlinson earned selection to his second All-Academic team. The 2016-17 Player of the Year holds a 3.33 GPA. The Welwyn Garden City, England native led the Bears with an average of 73.3 strokes per round and recorded four top-10 finishes on the year. He finished tied for fifth at the Southland Championship and was a member of the UCA Dean’s List for the Fall 2016 semester.
 
New Orleans senior Markus Krieger rounded out the All-Academic selections, posting a 4.00 GPA and a major in finance. The Stockholm, Sweden native played in all 10 tournaments as a senior, leading the team in stroke average (75.103), rounds played (29) and rounds below par (5). He posted three top-10 finishes with a second-place showing at the Samford Intercollegiate in the fall. Krieger carded a season-best 70 twice - in the second round of the Samford Invite on Oct. 31, 2016 and the second round of the Grove Page Classic on March 13, 2017. He was named a Privateer Director of Athletics Scholar for his academic work in the fall, serves as president of UNO’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is a member of the peer tutoring group.
 
The All-Academic teams are voted on by a head coach, sports information director and academic/compliance staff member from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competition to qualify for All-Academic selection. Nominees who were also named to the All-Conference First Team or CoSIDA Academic All-District team are automatically named Southland All-Academic.
 
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13 member schools, votes for the student-athlete of the year. The Southland student-athlete of the year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
