Lamar’s Feucht Wins Third Straight Student-Athlete of the Year Award
Southland Conference
FRISCO, Texas – Michael Feucht of Lamar was named the Southland Conference Men’s Tennis Student-Athlete of the Year for the third consecutive season, the league announced Thursday with the all-academic men’s tennis teams.
Feucht, a senior from Augsburg, Germany, earned the honor in 2015 and 2016. The three-time award winner capped his last season with the Cardinals by earning the team back-to-back regular season titles for the first time since 1975-76. The finance major was selected to the Southland All-Conference First Team for the third successive season after going 4-1 at the top flight in league singles play. He also earned a spot on the first team in doubles, playing at the No. 2 slot this season with teammate Benny Schweizer.
The Cardinals claimed four spots between the two academic teams to lead all schools. Alongside Feucht, Lamar added two more automatic selections to the all-academic first team in seniors Nikita Lis and Juuso Laitinen; all three of these Cardinals were three-time all-academic selections. Senior Sebastian Santibanez was selected to the All-Academic Second Team.
Southland Player of the Year Kevin Bettendroffer of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and teammate sophomore Carlosa Pedrosa Cuevas were automatic selections to the All-Academic First Team after earning spots on the All-Conference First Team. Bettendroffer was a second-time all-academic selection. Islander teammate Mitchell Cook was selected to the second team.
Abilene Christian’s Josh Sheehy was the lone member voted into the first team. The sophomore from Arlington, Texas, is a financial management major with a 3.93 GPA who went 4-1 in the No. 1 slot singles in league play.
Nicholls’ Bernard Wezeman was named to his third all-academic team with a 3.92 GPA in psychology. Giacomo Adoncecchi and Nicolas Kramer represent New Orleans with selections to the second team.
All six schools are represented on the all-academic teams with UIW’s Sebastian Mortier rounding out the teams.
The All-Academic teams are voted on by a head coach, sports information director and academic/compliance staff member from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competition to qualify for All-Academic selection. Nominees who were also named to the All-Conference First Team or CoSIDA Academic All-District team are automatically named Southland All-Academic.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13 member schools, votes for the student-athlete of the year. The Southland student-athlete of the year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
