Will Bullard Drafted By Harlem Globetrotters
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Former Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men’s basketball player Will Bullard was one of six players selected in the second annual Harlem Globetrotters draft the team announced on Wednesday.
“I am really excited about the opportunity, but at the same time humble,” said Bullard. “I am taking it as it comes. It is a great opportunity.”
Known for his leaping and dunking ability, Bullard capped his career in an Islanders’ uniform by placing second to fellow selection Sonny Weems at the 2008 State Farm College Slam Dunk Contest held in San Antonio the same weekend as the Final Four. Bullard, who averaged 3.9 points and 2.1 rebounds a game, was the third pick in the draft.
“I am extremely happy for Will and the opportunity he has,” said Islander men’s basketball coach Perry Clark. “Will is a tremendous athlete and has the enthusiasm and energy for the game that will allow him to fit in well with the Globetrotters.”
A pair of NBA draft picks was chosen ahead of Bullard. Georgetown’s Patrick Ewing, Jr., who is the son of the legendary center, was a second-round pick of the Sacramento Kings in this year’s NBA Draft. Weems of Arkansas was picked second. He was a second-round pick of the Chicago Bulls this season. Three-point specialist Tay Fisher of Siena, 6-11 post player Longar Longar of Oklahoma and Donald Thomas, an All-American high jumper were also selected.
Each of the six players will be invited to camp in the fall to compete for the honor of joining the Globetrotters for their 83rd consecutive season of touring the world.
“When evaluating draft prospects, we look for players that bring special skills and the personality to potentially be Harlem Globetrotters,” said Globetrotters Coach Clyde Sinclair. “We hope we can be as fortunate as last year, when our top pick, Ant Atkinson, not only made the team, but has flourished.”
