Sam Houston State Wins Back-to-Back Southland Conference Outdoor Track Championships

ARLINGTON, Texas - For the second consecutive year, Sam Houston State University captured both the men's and women's Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field team championship titles at Maverick Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The Bearkat women scored 164 points, while the men scored a conference-best 168.

MEET RESULTS

Finishing second in the women's race with 135 points was Texas State, followed by Stephen F. Austin's 101.5 points for third and fourth place went to Texas-San Antonio with 85 points. Host Texas-Arlington bumped out Lamar for fifth with 68 point, LU finished with 63 for sixth. Northwestern State (58) placed seventh, followed by Southeastern Louisiana (52.50), Louisiana-Monroe (44), McNeese State (40) and Nicholls State (8) completing the 11-team field.

Individual high point winner for the women was Texas State's Camilla Davis. Her 24.25 total points edged out SHSU's Roshunda Betts and Quantinette Fields who each tallied 24 points for second. Three tied for fourth-place with 20 points; Sarah Stultz and Yuliya Stashkiv of Texas State and Ashley Monteau of Stephen F. Austin.

Davis, a junior from Palacios, Texas, took gold in the long jump with leap of 20-7. On the track, she finished second to Fields (11.55) in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.61, and, in the 200, she placed fourth with a mark of 24.02 to earn five points. She also ran the third leg of the fourth-place 4x100-meter relay team

Competing with SHSU in the team race were Texas-San Antonio men who placed second with 131 points and third-place Texas-Arlington who scored 111 points. Stephen F. Austin (86), Texas State (71), Southeastern Louisiana (70), McNeese State (63), and Northwestern State (48) rounded out the field of eight. Louisiana-Monroe placed ninth with 37 and Lamar was 10th with 23. The UTSA men won the 2006 SLC indoor title and placed third at the 2005 SLC outdoor championship.

Sam Houston State's Brandon Moseley collected the most individual points with 24, followed by 23 points from Darrick Brown of McNeese State. Third-place top-finisher went to UTA's Jared Connaughton (22), while Bearkat Christian Ehrenborg (20) and Robert Melin of Texas State (19) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Moseley won the 5,000-meter run on Monday in a time of 14:55.02 to cap his week and win 10 points for the event. Earlier in the meet, the senior from Wallis, Texas, finished second in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:20.90 on Saturday and then placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:19.33) on Sunday.
