FRISCO, Texas -
McNeese State offensive lineman Brent Pousson, Stephen F. Austin's Andrew Fleck and Texas State's Walter Musgrove have been selected as a charter members of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame National Honor Society.
Pousson, an Iota, La., native and graduate of McNeese, was selected for his combined academic and athletic excellence during his career with the Cowboys.
Pousson was an honor student at McNeese, a three time all-conference academic selection and an all-conference and all-Louisiana selection on the football field. He is now pursuing a master degree in agriculture-science.
He also recently signed a free agent football contract with the Cleveland Browns.
Fleck was a two-year starter for SFA after transferring from Virginia Tech. Fleck started the first 11 games of his career on the 'Jacks' defensive line before switching to tight end as a senior. He concluded his career by earning honorable mention All-Southland Conference honors. Fleck also received the Dick Wright Award at last week's annual SFA Champion's Dinner.
Fleck was a standout performer, not only on the field, but in the classroom as well. A 2006 team co-captain, Fleck was a semifinalist for the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame's Draddy Trophy, an award commonly considered the "Academic Heisman."
Musgrove capped his senior season by being named the Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year. He was also a two-time, first-team CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI selection as well as a three-time SLC Academic All-Conference pick. The Duncanville native carried a 3.38 GPA as a student at Texas State and has been accepted to attend Tulane Law School.
Musgrove was voted the top defensive back on the 2006 All-SLC team after leading the Southland with five interceptions this year. Musgrove graduated from Texas State in May, 2006 with a bachelor's degree in English despite undergoing chemotherapy for Hodgkin's Disease. He interned last summer for GSD&M Advertising, assisting on the national advertising firm's American Legacy Anti Smoking Campaign.
Musgrove finished his collegiate career with 259 total tackles, eight interceptions and broke up 16 passes. He was a third-team selection to the Arthur Ashe squad in 2006.
Steve Hatchell, president and chief executive officer of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, wrote of Pousson, "The National Football Foundation strives to showcase the exceptional young men who play the game and embody football's unique ability to teach leadership, teamwork, discipline and the drive to compete. We take great pride in holding you out as a shining example of these traits and football's power to continually produce our country's next generation of great leaders."
