2007 CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-SLC WOMEN'S GOLF TEAM ANNOUNCED
Central Arkansas's Christina Lecuyer has been named the 2007 Capital One Southland Conference Women's Golf Student-Athlete of the Year, as announced by the league office Friday. Lecuyer, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was also selected All-SLC First-Team after leading UCA with a 76 stroke average in 30 rounds of play with a best round of 69.
An eight-time President's List selection and general management major, Lecuyer racked up a 3.61 grade point average while swinging her way to eight top-10 finishes, with two medalist honors at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islander Spring Classic (215) and the Murray State Lady Racer Classic (152).
Joining Lecuyer on the SLC All-Academic team is 2007 SLC Player of the Year Therese Nilsson of Lamar. A two-time First-Team All-SLC selection and former Freshman of the Year, Nilsson sports a 3.16 GPA majoring in exercise science, and led the league in top-10 finishes with nine, including medalist honors at the McNeese State Spring Invitational (223) and finishing tied in the SLC Golf Championship (221), before falling in a sudden-death playoff. Nilsson finished second in the league with a 75.39 stroke average over 33 rounds of play.
Communication major Hillary Zeigler joins Nilsson on the SLC All-Academic team with a 3.28 GPA. A second team All-SLC pick, Zeigler sliced through the competition with a 76.39 stroke average in 33 rounds of play, in route to six top-10 finishes, including medalists honors at the Chris Banister Gamecock Classic (214) and Lady Cardinal Invitational (150).
Sam Houston State's Jennifer Heinz earns her second consecutive SLC All-Academic selection. A 2007 second-team All-SLC selection and Dean's List student, Heinz finished with five top-10 finishes and a 78.14 stroke average through 29 rounds of play. With an eighth-place individual finish in the SLC Golf Championship (231), Heinz's steady swing helped the Bearkats take home the SLC Golf title.
Rounding out the 2007 SLC All-Academic team is SHSU's Wendy Joyner. A biology major with a 3.45 GPA, Joyner concluded her sophomore year with a career-best 78.03 stroke average in 32 rounds of play including two top-10 finishes.
The all-academic team honors student-athletes who were selected all-conference and/or named as a national all-academic recipient this year while also earning at least a 3.00 grade point average. Student-athletes must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition. The student-athlete of the year is annually presented to the individual in each conference sport who achieves excellence in academics and athletics. Nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average to go along with outstanding athletics achievement.
