CHICAGO, Ill. - The Southland Conference led the way with five first-team selections as the 2007 College Sporting News Preseason All-America teams were announced Monday. The league’s five first-team picks in the newly-named NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) were McNeese State return specialist Steven Whitehead, defensive end Bryan Smith and place kicker Blake Bercegeay, along with the Sam Houston State tandem of tight end Blake Martin and offensive tackle Brandon Hale.

Following the Southland with its five first-team picks was the Southern and Big Sky conferences with four each, and the Gateway and Great West with three each.  Three other Southland student-athletes were honored with preseason accolades, as Nicholls State running back Broderick Cole was a second-team choice, and the Texas State duo of offensive guard Matt Jenkins and punter Chris MacDonald earned third-team recognition.

Whitehead, the 2006 Southland Conference Player of the Year, ranked second in the league with 130 yards of all-purpose yards per game. He accumulated 1,560 yards in 12 games to help McNeese post a 7-5 overall record and go 5-1 in SLC play to win its fourth regular-season crown in the last six years.

Smith, the league's 2006 Defensive Player of the Year, ranked 20th in the SLC with 68 tackles, but was first by a long shot with 13.5 quarterback sacks and 21 tackles for lost yardage. The Newton, Texas, product established a new Southland single game record with five of his quarterback sacks.

Bercegeay finished second in the Southland a year ago with 87 points as he hit on 18-of-20 field goals and 33-of-36 extra points.

Cole rushed for 241 yards on 58 carries last year, averaging 4.2 yards per catch and scoring five touchdowns.

Martin caught 39 passes to tie for second in the SLC, averaging 12.3 yards per catch last season, while Hale was a first-team All-SLC selection.

Jenkins was a second-team All-SLC pick last year, while MacDonald punted 46 times for 1,996 yards, averaging 43.4 yards per punt.

Defending national champion Appalachian State leads the way on the 2007 College Sporting News preseason NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision All- American football teams with five players named overall.

Mountaineer senior tailback Kevin Richardson, who rushed a season-high 30 times for 179 yards and four touchdowns in the national title game last year to guide ASU to their second straight Division I crown is joined on the first team by teammate Kerry Brown who was chosen at offensive guard.

McNeese State and Northern Iowa both placed four players on the All-American teams while Cal Poly, Furman, Montana, North Dakota State, Portland State, South Dakota State and Youngstown State landed three players each on the 75-player squad. There were nine schools that received two selections.

42 different schools and each of the 15 conferences received All-American picks lead by the Big Sky, Great West and Southern Conferences with 11 each.

Reigning Walter Payton Award winner and New Hampshire quarterback Ricky Santos is one of only four players to repeat as first-team preseason picks.

He is joined by fullback Jerome Felton of Furman, center Brennan Carvalho of Portland State and offensive guard Matt Alfred of Eastern Washington. James Madison safety Tony LeZotte, a first-team pick in 2006, made the second team this season.

Other players who made one of the three preseason teams in 2006 and were among the 75 players honored this year include Brown and safety Corey Lynch of Appalachian State, Broderick Cole of Nicholls State, punter Mike Dragosavich of North Dakota State, running back Lex Hilliard of Montana, defensive end Kendall Langford of Hampton, quarterback Eric Sanders of Northern Iowa and kicker Rob Zarrilli of Hofstra.

There are also 12 players from the 2006 CSN postseason "Fabulous Fifty FCS Team" represented on this year's preseason honors squad.

On offense, Santos, Richardson, Brown, Felton, Carvalho, Alex Watson of Northern Arizona, Jerome Simpson of Coastal Carolina, Ramses Barden of Cal Poly and Josh Johnson of San Diego were 2006 honorees. On defense, Lynch is the lone repeater. Special teamers Steven Whitehead of McNeese State and Jayson Foster of Georgia Southern complete that group.
