NACOGDOCHES, Texas - After a 2007 season filled with highlights and awards, the Stephen F. Austin baseball team racked up another award when assistant coach Johnny Cardenas was named Coach of the Year for the Texas Collegiate League on Friday.

Cardenas served as head coach of the Wichita Falls Roughnecks for the second year and led his squad to a 25-18 record and first place in the Rogers Hornsby Division. In doing so he helped boost the Roughnecks' winning percentage to .581, 143 points higher than 2006. Wichita Falls also sported the TCL Player of the Year in Chris Richburg and batting champion John Dao.

Cardenas has experienced a lot of success in 2007, having also been a part of the SFA baseball team that qualified for its first-ever Southland Conference Tournament. The `Jacks won 16 more games than the previous season, and placed Steven Hill on two All-America squads.

The Texas Collegiate League is a wood-bat summer league that draws collegiate players from around the nation to a minor-league type environment intended to prepare prospects for the next level of baseball. The 2007 edition of the TCL saw over 250 participants from 91 different colleges and universities.
