Roadrunners Can't Catch Horned Frogs

UTSA 60, TCU 73

 

FORT WORTH, Texas ? Senior forwards Onika Anderson and Ryba Pawlaczyk and senior guard Monica Gibbs each recorded double-doubles, but TCU had three players that scored in double figures and the Lady Frogs defeated UTSA, 73-60, on Sunday evening.

Anderson, who collected her 10th career double-double, led the Roadrunners (1-1) with game highs of 22 points and 13 rebounds. Pawlaczyk, meanwhile, collected her second double-double to open the year (17 points, career-best 15 boards) and Gibbs recorded the 24th double-double of her career with 14 points and 11 assists.

Helen Sverrisdottir netted a team-high 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for TCU (2-0), while TK LaFleur and Emily Carter added 16 and 12 points, respectively.

TCU built its largest lead of the game at 52-33 when it used a 10-1 run to open the second half. UTSA responded with a 14-7 spurt to get within a dozen with Anderson scoring 10 points. However, the Lady Frogs netted five quick points to push their lead to 17 with 6:52 to play. Gibbs’ three-point play with less than a minute left closed the gap to 70-59, but TCU hit 3-of-4 from the free throw line to hold on for the 13-point victory.

UTSA jumped out to a 6-3 early lead on Gibbs’ pull-up jumper four minutes into the first half. TCU then took its first lead of the contest after a 14-4 run over the next seven minutes. An Anderson base-line jumper pulled UTSA within three midway through the stanza, but back-to-back buckets by Garoutte and Carter gave TCU a seven-point advantage and it had a 42-30 edge at the half.

The Roadrunners continue their three-game road trip next weekend with contests at Wichita State and Kansas State.

 

Texas State 45, Iowa 87

Iowa City, Iowa ? Defending Big Ten champions Iowa outscored the Texas State women’s basketball team by 20 points in both halves as they handed an 87-45 loss to the Bobcats in their second game of the season Sunday afternoon at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City.

 Texas State is off to a 0-2 start after falling to Drake in its season opener. The team will look for its first victory as they continue its road swing with four remaining away games. Iowa notched its first win of the season, now posting a 1-0 record.

Ashley Cole led the Bobcats with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Iowa jumped to an early lead scoring their first basket at the 19:10 mark and pressed on to post 19 before Texas State could reach double figures. The ?Cats hit the mark on a three-point shot from Ryann Bradford to trim the lead to eight at 10:00 even.

Two free throws from Cole sent the ?Cats on a 4-2 run before the Hawkeyes countered with a 14-3 attack and three points from Victoria Davis at 3:03 were Texas State’s final contribution to the half, while the Hawkeyes surged to a 40-21halftime lead.

The final period played out much like the first with Iowa scoring a quick two points followed by Texas State’s counter. Cole dropped in a pair of jumpers and three-pointers to aid the half but the Hawkeyes shot 65 percent from the field to finalize the near-double tally.

Aimee Hilburn and Victoria Davis finished with six points and Gabriell Mattox shared a game-high seven rebounds with Cole.

Iowa had four players in double figures, with Megan Skouby leading all players with 18.

The Bobcats were 15-for-64 from the field with just two points in the paint and finished with 32 rebounds. Iowa shot 33-for-59 from the field, including 44 points in the paint, and brought down 50 rebounds.

Texas State continues its opening six-game road swing with two contests at the Tyler Ugolyn Columbia Classic on Nov. 21-22 in New York City, New York. The Bobcats face Navy at 11 a.m. CT Friday before taking on either Columbia or Long Island on Saturday.

Sam Houston State 52, Arkansas-Little Rock 81

 

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. ? Turnovers proved to be the difference as Arkansas-Little Rock handed the Sam Houston State women’s basketball team an 81-52 non-conference loss Sunday afternoon.

 

The Trojans scored 27 points off the Bearkats 26 turnovers while Sam Houston collected only seven points from UALR’s nine miscues.

 

Otherwise, Sam Houston State (0-2) played Arkansas-Little Rock (1-0) evenly. The Kats hit 20-of-50 (40 percent) from the field while UALR was 32-of-66 (42 percent).

 

Brittany Brooks led the Bearkats with 11 points. Leasa Ailshie added eight points with five assists and Britni Martin scored six. Sam Houston totaled 39 bench point while the UALR bench scored only 17.

 

Arkansas-Little Rock was led by Kim Sitzman with 21 points and Asriel Cooper with 17.

 

The Trojans led from buzzer to buzzer, building a 36-18 halftime margin. Sam Houston was outscored 45-34 in the second period.

 

Sam Houston State will play its third game of the 2008-09 season Friday evening when the Bearkats play host to Centenary at 7 p.m. in Johnson Coliseum.
