McNeese State Upsets UTSA in Southland Volleyball Tournamnet

NACOGDOCHES, Texas ? McNeese State advances in the opening round of the 2008 Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament in an upset sweep (25-23, 25-21, 25-21) over UTSA.

Senior outside hitter Alyson Jones led No. 6 seed McNeese State with 18 kills, tying her second-most kills in a match this season and her 15th match with 10 or more kills. Senior middle blocker Jennifer Cook added 10 kills and junior setter Sarah Cartie led with 38 assists.

No. 3 seed UTSA was led by junior middle hitter Stefanie Robbins with 11 kills. Robbins was the only Roadrunner with double-digit kill totals. Freshman setter Amber Brooks recorded 31 of UTSA’s 39 assists on the day.

The McNeese State win marks the 13th in Southland tournament play and second under coach Dale Starr (2-2). The loss by UTSA marks their third consecutive season the Roadrunners have fallen in the first round of the Southland tournament.

McNeese State advances to the semifinals and will face the winner of No. 2 seed Lamar vs. No. 7 seed Nicholls State. Match time is scheduled to begin Saturday at 1 p.m. The winner will advance to the tournament title match on Sunday at 2 p.m.
