Lady Lions Edge Ladyjacks in Southland Tournament Opener
LAKE CHARLES, La. ? Double overtime was not enough time to decide the opening match of the 2008 Southland Conference Soccer Tournament as No. 5 Southeastern Louisiana edged No. 4 Stephen F. Austin, 3-2 in penalty kicks.
In just their second penalty kick match in program history the Lady Lions capitalized on their first two opportunities as sophomores Natalie Santana and Nicole Brannigan gave Southeastern a two goal lead.
Facing elimination SFA sophomore Camille Royer and freshman Edwina Forbes sank consecutive kicks to tie the match at two apiece.
SLU junior Candice Wallace was the last chance for the Lady Lions and she came through edging a kick past SFA keeper Courtney Bauder for a decisive 3-2 lead.
In what would be her last match in a Ladyjack uniform senior Amanda Lackey was unable to extend the overtime session as SLU keeper Lacey Bockhaus grabbed one of her two saves on the day, advancing SLU to the second round.
Southeastern advances to play top seed and regular-season champion Texas State in match three on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The winner will advance to the title match for an opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament.
