UT Arlington 5, at Texas Tech 3 (9 Innings)

LUBBOCK, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team split with Texas Tech in a doubleheader Tuesday at Rocky Johnson Field. The Mavs snapped a two-game non-conference losing streak with a 5-3 win in game one and the Red Raiders won the second 8-1.
In game one, senior Amanda Swofford gave the Mavs the 1-0 lead in the top of the second with her 11th home run of the season, but the Red Raiders quickly answered in the home half of the inning to make it even again heading into the third.
After leading UTA last season, senior Katie Jones, hit her fourth home run of the season in the top of the third to put the Mavs back on top 2-1.
After two scoreless innings, Texas Tech’s Jennifer Bowers led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a shot over the center field fence to knot the score at 2-2.
In the Mavs fifth extra inning game of the season, sophomore Samantha Chumchal hit a three RBI blast to left center in the ninth. Chumchal’s second homer of the season plated Kristin Moore who reached on a singles and freshman Whitney Simpson who reached on a fielder’s choice, to put the Mavs ahead 5-2.
In the bottom of the ninth, Tech’s comeback fell short as they were only allowed to score one run off a double from Elizabeth Eimen.
Sophomore Cara Hulme (12-5) picked up the complete game win with nine strikeouts, giving up just three runs while scattering five hits. Ashley Jacobs (8-14) took the loss for Texas Tech with five runs on six hits and four walks.
In the second game, Tech jumped on the board with a pair of runs in the first and doubled its lead with two more runs in the home half of the second inning for the 4-0 advantage.
Jones scored the Mavs lone run in game two after reaching on a walk in the top of the fifth and crossing home on a double from freshman Rebecca Collom.
Texas Tech answered in the home half of the inning with four more runs to seal thewin.
Senior Laura Jones (5-11) took the loss for the Mavs, while Tye Coats (6-10) is credited with the win for the Red Raiders.
UTA returns to Southland Conference action this weekend as it hosts Southeastern Louisiana for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

CONWAY, Ark. - The University of Central Arkansas softball team only came up with five hits in a double-header against Tulsa at Farris Field on Tuesday night. Golden Hurricane pitcher Jordan Kinard limited UCA to two hits in a 6-1 win in the opener and Jackie Lawrence allowed three hits in a 5-0 nightcap shutout. With the wins, Tulsa improved to 26-20 and the Bears fell to 5-38.
In game one, TU took an early 2-0 lead with RBI's from catcher Christian Timmons and first baseman Sara Dyer in the top of the first. UCA sophomore Sarah Garcia cut the advantage to 2-1 with a solo home run to right field to lead off the bottom of the first.
The Golden Hurricane added three runs on four hits in the fifth inning, including a two-run double by third baseman Kailey Yarmer. Lindsey Tower doubled in the sixth and reached third on throwing error, then was driven in on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Lauren Lindsay to put TU up 6-1.
Kinard (10-4) walked one and struck out four in the win. UCA senior Lyndsey Harris (1-19) allowed nine hits, four earned runs, a walk and fanned two.
In game two, Tulsa scored a pair of runs on four hits in the second inning. An error and four hits led to three runs in the fourth inning, giving TU the 5-0 lead.
UCA threatened in the bottom of the seventh by loading up the bases with two outs. Lawrence, was able to get out of the jam by inducing a ground ball fielder's choice to end the game.
Lawrence (11-8) walked four and struck out eight. UCA junior Kora Behrens (3-11) gave up eight hits, four earned runs, two walks and strike out in four innings. Junior Claire Collom allowed a walk and struck out two in three innings of relief.
The Bears will travel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a three-game Southland Conference series, beginning on Friday.
At South Alabama 4, Southeastern La. 1
MOBILE, Ala. - Southeastern Louisiana closed out its non-conference road schedule with a 4-1 loss to South Alabama in non-conference softball action Tuesday night at Jaguar Field.
USA pitcher Shannon Smith (4-4) held Southeastern (27-20) to four hits in the loss. South Alabama improved to 21-26 overall with the victory, touching up Southeastern pitchers Rachel Ray (15-11) and Jenna Yoder for seven hits.
South Alabama took advantage of two Lady Lion errors to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Jenny Stevens reached on an error by Ray with two outs. Autumn Hudson followed with a single to right centerfield that senior Nicole Schoenberger booted, allowing Stevens to score from first and give the Lady Jaguars an early edge.
Southeastern mounted its first threat in the top of the third inning. Singles by freshman Katie Duhe and Kelly Lyman put runners at first and second with two outs. However, Smith forced senior Arica Rodriguez to fly out deep to center field to end the threat.
The Lady Lions again put pressure on USA in the fourth inning. Junior Heather Sherrill sliced her team-high 13th double of the season with one out. Smith pitched out of the jam, striking out junior Allyson McCubbins and inducing a fly out by freshman Tamra Ladnier. Sherrill is now one double shy of tying the school\'s career record of 39 doubles, currently held by former Lady Lion Brooke Kostic.
South Alabama added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hudson roped a one-out home run over the left field fence off Yoder to put USA up, 2-0.
The Lady Jaguars added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Consecutive two-out singles by Katie McGuire, Evelyne Pare and Courtney Chigaros pushed the Lady Jaguar edge to 3-0.
Southeastern finally got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Duhe reached on an error and advanced to third on a double by Brooke Lockhart. Sherrill followed with a sacrifice fly, plating Duhe and cutting the USA lead to 3-1.
South Alabama got the run back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hudson drew a walk to lead off the inning. Pinch runner Julie Morton then stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. Fallon Fisher then hit a fly just deep enough to right field to score Morton and put the Jaguars up, 4-1.
USA pitcher Beth Pilgrim sat Southeastern down in order in the seventh to earn her third save of the season.
Southeastern will close out Southland Conference play this weekend, facing Texas-Arlington in a three-game series in Arlington, Texas. The series begins with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, before concluding with a single game at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
