Texas State Downs UTA In Game 1 Of SLC Tournament
HUNTSVILLE, Texas ? Texas State began its conference post season in convincing fashion as the Bobcats run rule the UT Arlington Mavericks 22-2 in Game one of the 2008 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament.
Texas State raised the bar in conference post season play setting three league tournament team records scoring 10 runs in the sixth inning, 22 runs for the game, and 24 hits pounded out by the Bobcats line up topped the old record by eight hits.
Texas State sophomore catcher Ben Theriot led the charge for the Bobcats going three-for-five at the plate with seven RBI topping the tournament record of six held by Will Pearce of Northwestern State in 1996.
Texas State got started early on putting up five in the bottom of the first off UTA starter Ryan Robinson. Thomas Field led off the inning with a walk followed by a stolen base to second. 2008 Southland Conference Hitter of the Year Paul Goldschmidt singled to drive in Field for the first of his four RBI on the day.
The sixth inning sealed the deal for Texas State as the Bobcats slated 10 runs setting a new league tournament record. Eight Bobcats in the starting line up had two or more hits and scored two or more runs.
Texas State will play the winner of game two between #2 seed Lamar vs. #7 seed Southeastern Louisiana. UT Arlington will now play in game 5 Thursday at 9 a.m. and will face the loser of game two.
