SHSU Tops Islanders In Game 8 Of SLC Tournament

HUNTSVILLE, Texas ? Tournament host Sam Houston State stays undefeated in tournament play dealing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi its first tournament loss as a Southland Conference member in an eighth inning run rule decision, 13-2.

 

After day two of the 2008 SLC Baseball Tournament Sam Houston State and Lamar are in the driver’s seat to meet in the finals as both teams are 2-0 heading into Friday.

 

Guillaume Duguay followed teammates Dallas Gallant’s complete game with one of his own tossing 121 pitches in eight innings giving up one earned run with six strike outs and only one walk.

 

Sam Houston State jumped out early with three runs in the second followed up by another four in the third inning.

 

Southland first team selection Seth Hammock started things off for the Cats doubling down the left field line and was driven by Nick Zaleski for the first of his four RBI on the day. Ryan Weber doubled to left field after a base hit from Heath Pugh scoring two more for a second inning lead of 3-0.

 

In the third inning SHSU picked up where they left off adding another four runs as Todd Sebek singled through the right side to lead off the third and was driven home by first team all conference selection Keith Stein giving the Bearkats a 4-0 lead.

 

Leading hitter on the day for SHSH, Bobby Verbick racked up his first of five RBI with a single to center field sending Stein home for the Bearkats fifth run of the day.

 

A&M-Corpus Christi got on the board in the fifth inning as Stephen Flora homered to left field for the Islanders first run of the day, and were able to tack on another with by a SHSU fielding error for a 7-2 deficit after five innings.

 

In the eighth inning designated hitter Bobby Verbick ended the game an inning early with a grand slam giving the Bearkats a 13-2 lead.

 

Sam Houston State will now await the winner of A&M-Corpus Christi vs. UTSA on Friday morning’s game 10 match up.
