SLC Announces Cross Country Athletes of the Week
FRISCO, Texas ? The Southland Conference has announced its cross country athletes of the week. Lamar’s Francis Kasagule earned was the men’s athlete of the week, while the UTSA pair of Dana Mecke and Kayla Pratt earned women’s athlete of the week honors. Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for a player from his or her own school.
Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week: Francis Kasagule, Lamar
Francis Kasagule led the way for the Cardinals men’s team, which won the team title last Friday at the Bear Twilight Run in Waco, Texas. The junior from Gayhza, Uganda, won the individual title in the men’s 6K race in a time of 18:23.49. It was his second straight Baylor Twilight Invitational title.
Honorable Mention: Taylor Ray, Sam Houston State; Ari Perez and Scott Vance, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Women’s Cross Country Athletes of the Week: Dana Mecke & Kayla Pratt, UTSA
Junior Dana Mecke (Bulverde, Texas) and freshman Kayla Pratt (Del Rio, Texas) combined for a comfortable victory last Friday at the UTSA Opener at Olmos Park in San Antonio, Texas. The duo teamed up to clock a 34:02 on the 4x1,200-meter course, finishing well ahead of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi team of Anna Ronoh and Sheila Salil (34:15).
