Southland Women's Soccer Tournament Final to be Broadcast by Southland TV
FRISCO, Texas - The championship match of the 2009 Southland Conference Women's Soccer Tournament will be televised live on the Southland Conference Television Network Sunday at 1 p.m., Central.
The tournament began Thursday with a 5-1 victory by No. 3 seed Stephen F. Austin over No. 6 seed McNeese State. Later Thursday, No. 4 seed Sam Houston State needed double-overtime to beat No. 5 seed UTSA, 3-2.
Ninety minutes of regulation and two overtime periods was not enough Friday night for No. 2 seed Southeastern Louisiana and Stephen F. Austin. The Lions locked up a spot in Sunday's championship after edging SFA in penalty kicks, 4-3. They will face No. 1 seed Texas State, which beat Sam Houston State, 2-1, in the late game on Friday.
Texas State (14-5-1, 8-0-1 Southland) claimed its second consecutive regular-season title and will be trying to defend last year's tournament championship. The Bobcats have won four tournament championship, which is tied with Northwestern State for the most in league history. Southeastern is a 12-4-2 record overall and was 6-1-1 in Southland play. Southeastern has one Southland tournament title to its credit, winning the even in 1998.
