Lamar Claims Fourth Consecutive Southland Men's Golf Title
KERRVILLE, Texas ? The Lamar University men’s golf team had four players score in the top six in the final round to win the 2009 Southland Conference Men’s Golf Tournament on the Club at Comanche Trail in Kerrville, Texas, marking the Cardinals fourth consecutive title and seven in the last nine years.
Southeastern Louisiana sophomore Cedric Scotto (72, 71, 69 ? 212) finished in a three-way tie with UT Arlington sophomore Zach Fischer (67, 68, 77 ? 212) and Lamar senior Justin Harding (71, 69, 72 ? 212) forcing a playoff for the top medalist winner.
After the first playoff hole on the 18th fairway, Scotto and Harding remained tied and teed off on the 10th fairway. Scotto chipped on within five feet and sank a birdie putt to win by one stroke.
Scotto joins former SLU men’s golfer Bill Sherman who won the award in 1998, as the only two Southeastern golfers to win the conference tournament.
Kevin Hesbois fifth-place finish (72, 70, 73 ? 215) is the lowest score by a Lamar freshman since 2001. Junior Hugues Joannes tied for fifth (73, 68, 74 ? 215) giving Lamar three golfers in the final top 5 finishes. Senior Leroux Ferriera tied for 11th (74, 70, 76 ? 220) and freshman Xavier Feyaerts tied for 14th (76, 72, 73 ? 221). Eight of the 15 rounds collectively scored by the Lamar men’s team were par or below.
Lamar’s next step will be determined next Monday, May 4 when the men’s NCAA Regionals will be announced. Competition is set to tee off on Thursday, May 14.
